Default BTB: Looming Cowboys Cap Issues

By KD Drummond on Nov 27, 5:48p

Dallas is going to be faced with several salary cap questions during the coming offseason. Looking at things in this light is scary, because Dallas is going to have to shell out a lot of money just to return the team that is 13-14 over the last two seasons. Take a look at players Dallas will need to address to avoid them walking or being in the final year of their deals:

Anthony Spencer - contract expires after season

Tony Romo - contract voids after 2013

Sean Lee - contract expires after 2013

Jason Hatcher - contract expires after 2013

Then, you look at players that aren't living up to their contracts for whatever reason and you wonder if any releases are on the horizon. Players such as:

Miles Austin: Salary $6.7 in 2013, no cap hit for release (his contract's the reason we are fined $10m in cap space)

Doug Free: Salary $7m($8.3m cap hit to release)

Jay Ratliff: Salary $5m ($7.1m cap hit to release)

Orlando Scandrick: Salary $2m ($2m-$3m cap hit to release)

There's still five games to go in 2012, and these players, some with recently signed deals, will have their worthiness evaluated over the home stretch.

Pretty sure there's some cap hit to release austin.

Overall savings but it's not like you simply cut his entire base salary out of the equation and that's the freed up space.

Austin was given $17M upfront that went against the uncapped year and he didn't get a signing bonus, so there is no cap hit if he's released.

Hence the salary cap fine.

Often times you see that in the fourth quarter. A lot of time the team on the other side feels it. We pride ourselves on being a physical football team. It's important to us. It's an important time of the year to lay that foundation." - Coach Garrett

No look at his contract he was given a restructure bonus.

Scandrick is not getting cut he has been solid all year and when he went out injured we missed him in the slot last game.

One of those guys will be spread out over two years most likely Free.

We may keep rat one more year

Hatcher we will most likely let walk

Free will be cut, if he is a June 1st cut we will save about 7 million but he will then be a 4 million cap hit in 2014.

Scandrick will not be cut for cap reasons. His cap his fine this year. He will be a 3.78 cap hit if kept. He will be 6.52 million cap hit if released.

I think Miles Austin is living up to his contract. Before the Washington game Miles had pretty much the same stats as Dez. Now I do think Miles is getting over paid and I think he will be resigned or restructured besides being released. He has only missed one game this year.

Ratliff will not be cut.
Ratliff had 18 million guaranteed and still has 4.375 in guarantees left with a prorated signing bonus cap hot of 6 million. It will cost us 10.375 to cut Ratliff or 7 million to keep him and then he can be cut after next year.

Your right I didn't see his restructured bonus.

Doug Free will have to take a pay cut if he wants to play for the Dallas Cowboys...bottom line.

They converted some base salary into guaranteed money, spreading it across the remaining years.

How is Scandrick not living up to a 2 mil salary?

Tough crowd, I guess.

Romo will sign a new contract, which will be cap friendly for the next couple of years.

Spencer is on the cap of 8.8 mil. Either he walks or signs a new contract, also cap friendly in the short term. Ditto with Lee.

Hatcher is likely bye-bye.

It's beyond me.

This guy is a complete imbecile if he thinks Scandrick is overpaid.

Bales' statistical analysis of Dallas defense can be found in the Newszone under Sabin's article:

"On 25 targets, Scandrick has given up only 6.1 YPA. That’s a remarkable number from the slot. Scandrick has also allowed a completion on only 48.0 percent of throws his way, and he still hasn’t given up a touchdown."

Just don't get the Scandrick hate, the guy is an outstanding slot corner.

Romo- Is our savior at QB until we draft a bonafide replacement
Scandrick- The guy is playing up to his contract, CB are hard to find
Ratliff- Dominant when he is healthy....we shall see
Free- Cut or massive restructuring in the teams favor, I'd rather see a younger stronger player take over, it couldn't be worse
Austin- Restructure but he is still a pretty good player
Hatcher- He might get over paid by another team. I'd prefer to draft a replacement than pay him.

There is a cap hit if we release Miles. The prorated signing bonus is the cap hit which will be 3.5 million. There was a thread about this yesterday and there is a thread about Doug Free today.
