It's amazing. Some photos that were redone in color lost some of their effect, but others actually became more intense with the addition of color.

Pretty cool. Makes the people seem more real somehow. Got a question though. When colorizing a photo how do you know what colors are supposed to be which? I know that certain things like the flag would be red white and blue but what about things like a shirt or dress? Is the person just guessing at the color or is there something int he detail of the black and white image that tells you it was a certain color? Or even the shade of the color?

I would hazard a guess that they draw their color tone inspiration from time period paintings. As far as the ship goes, it could be either a detailed research of what type of bottom coatings they were putting on ships at the time or just a guess.

I was reading one guy's explanation of it before, and I think it's a lot of research. The subject in a picture was wearing a medal, and he spent hours researching that medal. Very cool job. A WHOLE lot of work.

I imagine a lot is guess work, too.
