The Earl of Baltimore passed away on an Orioles Fantasy Caribbean Cruise last night.

Sad sad news for Orioles fans everywhere.

One of the greatest managers of all time.

The Orioles have 6 HOF'ers, one of them being Earl Weaver.

The other 5 are Frank Robinson, Brooks Robinson, Jim Palmer, Eddie Murray, and Cal Ripken Jr.

Brooks Robinson is Mr. Oriole, but Earl has been venerated, and loved by the people of Baltimore more than any of those players.

98 times he was ejected from a game for arguing with the umpires. Kicking dirt all over home plate made him so popular with the fans. O's fans loved nothing more than Earl with his hat turned backwards up in the face of an ump and then kicking dirt all over home plate.

When I think of an Earl Weaver led team I think of...

-A manager who relied on he starters to complete a lot of games and get a lot of wins. Guys that weren't necessarily overpowering (outside of maybe Palmer) but had good control
-A manager who would accept little production out of his SS/2B/C as long as they played terrific defense
-He was ahead of many other managers in realizing a walk is many times as good as a hit
-He wasn't into playing for 1-run. He didn't steal. He didn't bunt. He would work for the 3-run homerun... Walk, single, homer. And he would win 90+ games a year.
