I think this season was the most disappointing in our entire history. Not only did we lose in the first round, Dandy Don Merideth got out of his hospital bed to play the game. He didn't play very well, however as Bob Lilly would say many times since, the Defense was terrible. We Fans and Media decided to Barb-B-Que Dandy Don, Bob Lilly tells the story after the season he and Don went into a resturant together and the customers treated Don so poorly that Bob blames this event to sending Don to early retirement. He was so badly hurt by our attitude..... I don't know how the Cowboys history would be different if Don had have stayed, but I regret that we didn't get the chance to find out. |

In my opinion, this was our best team ever. We had so much talent on this team that nearly every one of our backups eventually became starters. We only lost 2 games that we shouldn't have lost that year, blowing leads against the Packers and Giants.
The loss to Cleveland in the playoffs was the most disappoint game ever for me as I just knew we were going all the way this time. I am also firmly convinced that we would have beaten the Jets in the SB as we matched up better with them than the Colts did. The Cowboys (12-2) and Colts (13-1) were the two top teams in the NFL that year, swapping 1 & 2 on offense and defense, we had the best offense and they had the best defense, and both were second to the other. I was really looking forward to that matchup in the NFL Championship game but was sure we would win it since Johnny Unitas was out. The playoff loss to the Browns was the last game for Meredith and Perkins who had been with us throughout all the tough years. Not the way I wanted to see either of them go out. We had beaten the Browns easily during the regular season and had crushed them in the playoffs the year before so they were looking for some revenge when we faced them this time. I remember that their defense was on fire and they swarmed whoever had the ball. Meredith and Morton both played terribly at QB with Don preceding Morton's performance in the 1977 SB against us by completing as many passes to the defense as to the offense. Our defense played a decent game with Howley scoring on a long fumble return, although they did give up a couple of big plays. But the offense just couldn't get anything going and we threw away nearly every chance we had settling for FGs or throwing INTs when we got close. I used to be able to name the entire starting team from that year (I can still name most of them) as well as most of the backups. What a great team that was and what a disappointment when we lost. It truly broke my heart.

Just to show you how things have changed in the NFL.
The Cowboys were 12-2. The Browns were 10-4. Week 2 of the season we decimated the Browns at the Cotton Bowl. Cleveland was the home team in the Playoffs. Isn't that amazing? The Cowboys literally held every tie breaker imaginable, yet were the visiting team. We won our 3rd Division Title, our 2nd as the NFL Capitol Division Champs. In 1966 the Division we were in was called the NFL East. From 1967 to 1969 we played in the NFL Capital Division and were the Champs all 3 years. No other team can claim that they were ever the NFL Capital Division Champions. Not in the entire History of the NFL. |
