Default Detroit Lions Picks

Rd 1 - 002 - Calvin Johnson, WR, Ga Tech

BIOGRAPHY: Three-year starter awarded All-Conference honors since his freshman season and named ACC Player of the Year last year. Junior numbers were 76/1,202/15 after 54/888/6 as a sophomore.

POSITIVES: Big, fluid, game-controlling receiver who is a dominant force. Uses his frame as an advantage and makes the difficult reception with defenders draped on him. Displays terrific eye/hand coordination, effortlessly catching the ball in stride.

NEGATIVES: Lacks the quick release off the snap. Long loping runner with built-up speed.

ANALYSIS: Possessing tremendous size, athletic ability and soft hands, Johnson is the 'go-to' receiver who cannot be stopped. Grades out as the top prospect in this year's draft and will be an early selection in round one.

Rd 2 - 034 -

Detroit trades second round pick (#34) to Buffalo for Bills second round pick (#43) and 3rd round pick (#74)Bills

Rd 2 - 043 - Drew Stanton QB, Mich State

BIOGRAPHY: Three-year starter whose senior year stats were 61%/1,807/12/10. All-Conference selection as a junior after completing 66.7% of his throws for 3,077 yards.

POSITIVES: Smart, hard-working passer with an NFL arm. Patient in the pocket, poised under pressure and buys time for receivers. Throws with an over-the-top delivery, accurate and nicely places the pass. Does not force the ball into coverage.

NEGATIVES: Not an elusive passer who can escape the rush. Struggled with injuries late in his senior campaign. Holds the ball too long in the pocket. Gets rattled, lose confidence and the roof will cave in.

ANALYSIS: After a tremendous start to his senior campaign, Stanton watched his draft stock fall dramatically due to poor play since October. Fell apart and lost confidence as his senior season progressed, then got injured. He may have salvaged his status a bit in offseson workouts.

Detroit trades 3rd round (#66) and 5th round (#145) to get Saints 2nd round pick (#58)

Rd 2 - 058 - Ikaika Alama-Francis DE, Hawaii

BIOGRAPHY: Three-year starter who came to school as a basketball player. All-Conference selection as a senior after totaling 39/10/4. Junior totals were 49/7.5/5.

POSITIVES: Athletically talented prospect with high upside. Quick off the snap, Alama-Francis is fluid moving about the field and nicely redirects to the action. Plays with good pad level and displays footwork moving laterally or in reverse. Fast off the edge and ma

NEGATIVES: Slow shedding blocks and must improve his playing strength. Bites on play-action passes and lacks top instincts. Tore a pectoral muscle in the Hula Bowl, which hampered his ability to work out prior to the draft.

ANALYSIS: A prospect just hitting his stride, Alama-Francis offers starting potential as a two-gap end in the NFL. Must add bulk, strength and finish to his game, yet is worth the investment of a first-day selection.

Detroit trades 3rd round (#74) and 4th round (#101) picks to Baltimore 2nd round pick (#62)

With pick #61 Gerald Alexander S, Boise State

BIOGRAPHY: Three-year starter who posted 32.5/2/4 as a senior after moving to safety. Career-best numbers of 53/5/8 came as a sophomore at cornerback.

POSITIVES: Competitive and instinctive defensive back who effectively patrols center field. Alert, works well with corners and is fluid moving about the field. Quickly breaks to the throw, nicely times his defenses and gets vertical to knock away the ball.

NEGATIVES: Struggles pedaling in reverse and minimally effective in man coverage. Marginal top-end speed. Does more hitting than wrap-up tackling.

ANALYSIS: A smart defensive back who is productive at several positions, Alexander is a solid late-round choice who could flourish in a zone system.

good news is we don't have to worry about them taking McFadden before Cleveland's pick, surely there'll be a nice receiver for them.

Dallas will have to wait until December 9th to test Newman against Johnson.

That's when Dallas goes to Detroit.

This was a typical Matt Millen draft.

Dreadful.

Calvin Johnson can't help but be great. And that makes this a one player draft.

The remainder will not be impact NFL players.
