This guy will come in, and cause of our scheme, maybe he'll get 3 sacks a year instead of 1 and half or 2 that Spears gets.
While thats an extra sack or two I don't think that is nearly worth it to give up a first on him, when we are in much greater need of a CB and a WR in the first round.
It's one thing to say you don't know him/like him or prefer another position/player.
DEs may not be focal points of the pass rushing attack in a 3-4 scheme (like OLBs) but you could not be more wrong about 3-4 DEs. Some 3-4s are more aggressive (like Wade's) than others but here is a sampling of the more sackcessful 3-4 DEs:
Darnell Dockett AZ 9 sks
Jarvis Green NE 5 sks
Bryan Thomas NYJ 8.5 sks 2006
Jarvis Greeen NE 7.5 sks 2006
Ty Warren NE 7.5 sks 2006
Luis Castillo SD 7.0 sks 2006
Bertrand Berry AZ 6.0 sks 2006
Shaun Ellis NYJ 5.0 sks 2006
Like anything else, it really depends on the quality of the player at the position. The better the player, the better the result. Not all 3-4 DEs are condemned to the Parcells profile of dancing w/2 OL and/or the playmaking equivalent of a speed bump.
If Dallas could get 6-8 sacks from any of its DEs it would make Ware 3x more dangerous.
