Couch files grievance against Browns

May 21, 2004
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Quarterback Tim Couch has filed a grievance against the Cleveland Browns, who have banned him from working out with them even though he is still under contract.

Couch didn't participate in the club's voluntary quarterback school this week. He also missed minicamp earlier this month after the Browns told him to stop coming to their training facility while they tried to trade him.

The Browns have been attempting to work out a deal for Couch, a former No. 1 overall pick, since signing free-agent quarterback Jeff Garcia as their starter in March.

Team spokesman Todd Stewart said Friday that Couch had filed the grievance through the National Football League Players Association earlier this week. Stewart had no other comment.

The NFLPA did not immediately return a message.

Couch had been working out at the team's training facility in Berea until Garcia was signed. Soon after, the Browns told Couch he was no longer welcome.

Before minicamp, the Browns went so far as to clean out Couch's locker and remove his nameplate.

Couch has been working out at his offseason home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment Friday.

On Thursday, Browns coach Butch Davis said he has no plans to release Couch after June 1. Davis also said there was still a possibility Couch could return as a backup.

That seems to be unlikely, however, since Couch's contract is for $7.6 million this season and $8 million in 2005.

Agent Tom Condon has had talks with the Green Bay Packers about Couch becoming Brett Favre's backup but has so far been unable to work out a deal.

Good, the more porblems Couch has, the more likely GB comes to us and offers us something for Hutch.

I'd say the chances of that have gone up from 1% to a good solid 3%!!!

Default Couch working out with team

Someone brought up a good point about Warner last week that may apply to Couch now.

If Couch is allowed to workout with the team and injures himself, the Browns would not be able to release him without an injury settlement. If he gets hurt working out on his own, I don't believe Cleveland has to offer a settlement.

Davis is an idiot if he keeps Couch on the team. They have jerked him around and his presence would not be good for team chemistry. Plus he just has not proven anything for the #1 overall pick. He is not even as good as Quincy Carter. (I always wanted to hijack a thread into a QC thread.)

Davis' claims that Couch won't be released are just sad posturing, Couch obviously won't be there next year, the only solid position that the team has is QB wish Garcia and Holcombe, they have lousy receivers, no line, some mediocre talent at RB, no defense whatsoever (Dexter Coakley, anyone?) except our leftovers plus Gerrard and Warren when they play. The last thing they need is a disaffected former #1 overall pick who has wasted his career with a lousy team while Carmen Policy and Dwight Clark learn they don't have what it takes, and Butch Davis cries and wishes he had his Miami job back.

That's if Green can stay on the field, he has been less than a stellar performer off the field.

Suggs flashed the talent I always thought he had in at least one game last year, but he still hasn't shaken durability questions.

Ideally they have a fairly talented backfield, in actual practice alot of things could go wrong.
