Spartans' defensive lineman Jarron Gilbert was the most impressive player at the San Jose State-Cal Poly-etc. Pro Day that occurred Friday. Twenty seven teams were represented at the workout, including head coaches Rex Ryan of the New York Jets and John Fox of the Carolina Panthers. Gilbert was the most impressive of the bunch, turning in a 4.76 40-yard dash at 6-5, 284 pounds. He also improved upon his already impressive Combine performances in the broad jump (10'7"), vertical (37"), short shuttle (4.40) and 3-cone (7.59). Typically, the collegiate coaches or scouts will put the players through the workouts. This workout was different, however, as Ryan took over the DL drills and worked Gilbert especially hard. Gilbert would seem to be a perfect fit in the Jets' 3-4 scheme at defensive end. The question isn't whether Gilbert can play, but at which position to utilize his unique combination of size and athletic ability. He is the son of former New Orleans Saints offensive tackle Daren Gilbert.

This is a guy that several mock drafts have him going to the Cowboys. There seems to be lot of talent at the OLB/DE area that is being profiled. The struggle for me is that a lot of the sources are at odds as to which of these players would work well in a 3-4 D. Is this guy good value at 51?

At #51 he is, but his measurables haven't translated to the field as much as you'd like. He's a bit of a project but some team will fall in love with him and take him early.

Any chance he could play OLB in 34?

Or is he strictly a DE in a 34 type defense?

He's even got about the same height as Kruger and I think he's a bit faster than Kruger as well.

Tyson Jackson is going to go high, and Gilbert won't be far behind. He's the number 2 five technique DE in the draft. With all the new 3-4 teams, he will be drafted higher than he should be, imo.

understand what your saying, id rather have a proven player like duke robinson,

i would like a proven starter from college, that has skins on the walls
