Default Buccaneers release QB Johnson, WR Jurevicius

Buccaneers release QB Johnson, WR Jurevicius
TAMPA, Florida - As expected, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have gotten rid of Super Bowl-winning quarterback Brad Johnson.

The Buccaneers on Tuesday released four players, including Johnson, who led them to a victory in Super Bowl XXXVII over the Oakland Raiders.

Johnson, 36, signed with the Buccaneers as a free agent in 2001 and led them to a Super Bowl title the following year, passing for 3,049 yards and 22 touchdowns with six interceptions for a rating of 92.9.

In 2003, Johnson set career-highs with 3,811 passing yards and 26 touchdowns, but was intercepted 21 times.

The Bucs recently restructured the contract of quarterback Brian Griese, paving the way for them to cut Johnson.

Griese, 29, started 10 games last season and ranked third in the NFC with a passer rating of 97.5. He completed 69 percent of his passes for 2,632 yards and 20 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. Chris Simms will likely serve as the backup to Griese.

Also Tuesday, the Buccaneers released receiver Joe Jurevicius, cornerback Mario Edwards and linebacker Ian Gold.

Ian Gold has said he wants to return to the WLB position. Now that Coakley's gone, maybe he's sombody of interest. Anybody know anything about him?
Thank you to all donated to the Jason Witten Camp drive!

Made the Pro Bowl in '01 as a special teamer. Started several years in Denver, and had a solid season about two years ago with 6.5 sacks. Nothing spectacular really...only stands about 6-0, 230.

Just checked his measurables. 6'0, 223?? How big do we want? What's the ideal linebacker size? For a 4-3, I guess it would be fine. For a 3-4, maybe not, huh...

The guy has heart and outstanding character but can't stay on the field. He's never once started every game and his TD total is pitiful. Great guy but I don't see us using FA money for him. Also don't need someone like Key who stays injured and isn't nearly as complete a player.
Did you know there are only 5000 Snow Leopards in the wild now and they are confined to Central Asia? However, the effective global population (those likely to reproduce) is less than half that number.

223 is awfully light for a linebacker. Heck, Woodson nearly weighed that and Williams easily exceeds that amount. Coakley is even bigger. The height isn't necessarily as important as the weight is.
