Default How Does Franchise Tag Work?

Ever noticed that the Boys never seem to actually use the Franchise Tag? I don't recall that it was ever used.

Generally, I understand the deal, but I read something about what happens after the tag is applied and then if the player moves and signs elsewhere, then the former team is somehow penalized by not having the TAG available the following year. Anyone know the rules and strategy behind this process? I can certainly understand why a player would be pissed off if it were used repeatedly; it denies the chance a guaranteed money and a longer term deal.

The TAG seems to be more in play each year and more players seem to be rebelling at its application. I wonder if anyone has heard if this will be a bone of contention in the upcoming labor negotiations.

I'll just respond a little as I'm not overly strong on franchise tag rules.

However, the last time the Cowboys used it was on Flozell Adams in 2003, I think. And he's been signed to a long-term deal since then. And as for why they haven't used it, well ask yourself who besides Flozell on this team have we let go that was even WORTH tagging?

That goes back to good drafting which we're just beginning to turnaround. Now I'll say this, if by some chance Witten isn't signed to an extension long-term, I believe he's a very good candidate for tagging.

Since Roy and T-New are 1st round picks, I think it'll be easier to sign them to an extension than Witten.
Thank you to all donated to the Jason Witten Camp drive!

If a player is tagged and signs elsewhere the theam that signs him looses 2 first round picks one in the year signed and the following year. what your talking about is if a franchise player works a long term deal (this year's dates) between march 16 and july 22. (its the 15th or 22nd of july but I don't remember exactly which) then the team will have used the tag on that player for the duration of his contract even if he is traded the only way to get the tag back b4 the end of the contract is if the player is cut or retires.

Now if the player is traded then he can work a long term contract with his new team without any tags being forefited.

Yes. This is what I was asking about thank you very much. This really puts a team in a bind, under certain circumstances, because it only gives you a year break. . . and then you are back to square one . . . if you try to sign the player then you are screwed for the future . . . interesting rule; bet it don't survive the next collective bargaining agreement.

This is statement says it all. We haven't exactly had any major superstars here in quite a while. BP wove straw into gold his first year here but the bottomline is that we haven't had the personnel to compete in a while.
Still left to accomplish:
sign OT Winston or G Moore

Well, that is part of it, the other is that Jones has paid the horses. Indeed, if Jones had been more cutthroat, he would have cut his ties to the superstars sooner to the Cowboys benefit. Look at Woodson, the triplets, Allen, and so forth; few complaints like we see on so many teams.
