Default Smith "Excused" Indefinitely from Vikes Offseason Program

Tice: 'It's in the league's hands'

Associated Press

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Minnesota Vikings running back Onterrio Smith, caught recently with a device called "The Original Whizzinator" that is designed to beat drug tests, will miss the rest of the team's offseason program for undisclosed reasons.

"He's been excused from the rest of the offseason program and he'll be gone indefinitely," coach Mike Tice said Thursday. "I really can't speak about any reasons why or when he'll be back. It's in the league's hands. We'll leave it at that."

Neither Smith's agent, Doug Hendrickson, nor NFL spokesman Greg Aiello immediately returned phone calls seeking comment.

Smith missed the team's camp on Tuesday for unspecified personal reasons. He returned on Wednesday and worked out, but didn't speak to reporters.

Smith was stopped April 21 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport after his bag set off a screening device. A search found several vials of dried urine and "The Original Whizzinator," which is marketed as a way to beat drug tests.

Smith told police the gear was for his cousin. He wasn't charged by police, and the NFL has said possession of the device alone isn't enough to violate league drug policies.

Smith has two strikes against him under the league's substance abuse policy, and is subject to a yearlong suspension with another violation.

Smith, a fourth-round pick in 2003, led the team in rushing last season with 544 yards.

I am so glad NOW that we passed on this guy....but I was not too happy when we passed on him during that draft.

Sometimes not getting what you want is a good thing.

Looks like he's out for the year.

The National Football league has suspended Minnesota Vikings running back Onterrio Smith for a year.

The reason for Smith's suspension was not immediately released. He will miss all of the 2005 football season.

Smith, 24, rushed for 579 yards as a rookie and led the Vikings last season with 544 yards.

Smith spent part of the 2004 season on the bench, serving a four game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. In the summer of 2004, Smith tested positive for marijuana.

At the time, Smith was in the league’s substance-abuse program for at least one other previous positive test.

In April 2005, Smith was detained at the Minneapolis/ St. Paul International Airport with a device called “The Original Whizzinator.” Smith reportedly told police the device is used “for making a clean urine test.”

He even went to several colleges.

As soon as they drafted the Florida running back (and were rumored to be interested in one of the "big 3" in the first round), you could probably guess that they had had enough of Smith.

He was a problem child at Tennessee before transferring. Give it a year and Al Davis will scoop him up.

I agree that the Raiders seem to take on all the NFL's problem children, but I don't think they will in this case. They just signed Lamont Jordan to a big contract to be their lead RB.

More than likely Smith will rtn to the Vikings, as I think two of their backs Michael Bennett and Moe Williams won't be there next year.

Onterrio Smith should be suspended for longer than one year for just being so stupid.

This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.
