Default New NFL Sunday Ticket Commercial

Have you seen the new Sunday Ticket commercial that has Dick Butkus and P. Manning next to each other.

Manning looks like the LB, he looks twice the size as Butkus.

Butkus one of the best LB's of all time, I believe he played at about 6' 3" 245 lbs and was huge for his time.

I can think of at least 13 QB's who are bigger the Dick Butkus now. I am sure I am missing a few.

Does it amaze anyone else that the QB's in this league now are bigger then the fiercest, most dominating defensive players of 30 years ago.

D. Bledsoe 6' 5" 240
K. Collins 6' 5" 245
D. Culpepper 6' 4" 264
R. Davey 6' 2" 245
D. Garrard 6' 2" 245
D. Henson 6' 5" 240
C. Hutchinson 6' 5" 240
B. Leftwich 6' 5" 245
P. Manning 6' 5" 235
D. McNabb 6' 2" 245
P. Rivers 6' 5" 230
B Roethlisberger 6' 4" 245
M. Schaub 6' 5 240

That's why it's pure folly to try to compare teams from different eras..

Today's teams would physically dominate even the best teams from 30 years ago.

It used to be a huge deal if there was a player on the roster who was 300lbs. Now it's a huge deal to have an offensive lineman who is under 300 lbs.

Ya know, when we talk about Glover's lack of size, every now then it hits me, the guy is 285lbs!

That's why I've always found Jim Brown to be an interesting player. He played 40 years ago but at 6-2, 228, he'd still hold up physically today. The guy was somewhat of a freak of nature.
RIP Santiago

Juke, I think that there are some players that are so skilled that they could succeed in any era.

Comparing teams from one era to another is one thing but players like Gayle Sayers, Chuck Bednarik (at LB not C) Earl Campbell, Marion Motley, John Mackey, Don Hutson, Otto Graham, Ronnie Lott, Alan Page (as a DE), James Lofton, Roger Staubach, Anthony Muņoz was 290 and most and teams are still trying to find the next best OT of all time to fill his spot.

A good football play is a good football player regardless of when they played respectfully, IMO

butkus was one mean SOB. no offense to payton, but in a dark alley at night - i'd much rather butkus had my back than manning. even at 62. guy's still an animal.

I completely agree. Compare the players' size and speed, and it's not even close.

I guess that's why I've always laughed when seeing an old-school player from the 60s-70s talk trash about the new generation, and how they'd be dominated if they played in his era.

I saw Nick Buoniconti up close a couple of years ago couldnt believe how small he was. But it isnt just different eras, people get smaller when they get older and especially muscular people
