We've bolstered our secondary as well, adding a young DB (Beriault) and not one, but TWO vet corners (Glenn and Henry), plus welcoming Ralph back from injury. At some point this season, we could be starting two corners neither of whom was active on our roster at the end of last season, and neither would cause us any major concern. In any case, we have a better group of corners than we did last year.
And, of course, we have Roy.
[View Full Quote]Now, our only concern was FS. We had Davis and Scott, basically. We weren't sure about Davis, and we didn't like Scott, but both are special teams machines. BP likes both for that reason, and that reason only.
But we'd already agreed - as much as this borad can ever agree - that FS was not a GLARING need, not with the other improvements we've made. "We can survive with a mediocre FS," we said. And we were not even sure whether Davis could be more than mediocre.
With Reese, we have more than mediocre. Not a great deal more, I'll grant you. But at least we know he's good (NOT great, NOT excellent, but he IS good, or he would NOT have stuck on an NFL roster for seven years). And he, too, is an ST demon. So even if he's not as good as I think (which is JUST good) he'll do no worse than provide competition for Davis at a reasonable price.
So here it is in summary:
2004 safeties: Williams, Dixon, Scott, Reeves, Davis, Cargile
2004 Corners: Newman, Frazier, Jones, Frenchie, Thornton
2005 safeties: Williams, Davis, Scott, Dixon, Reese, Beriault
2005 corners: Newman, Henry, Glenn, Hunter, Frenchie, Frazier, Jones, Thornton
That corner situation looks like a MAJOR upgrade, and at least there's competition and depth in the deep backfield, which there clearly was not in 2004.

And I know this reveals an unhealthy interest in the Redskins, but isn't it funny that their working out and trying to sign just about every veteran DB in the NFL, and we go get Reese right when their superstar FS gets into trouble?

I think the signing of Reese is a terrific move on Dallas part... not only do they leave the Skins with one less alternative in their search for DBs in FA,
but now the Dallas defense is just one better in the talent department... Reese is not going to break the bank or go on a 100 tackle or double digit int. season, but if the talent for this new Dallas defense is anything close to spectacular, then the experience of Reese as even a solid role player will become much more evident when Dallas is sacking the lights (hopefully) out of the opposing offense. The presence of another big DB in the Dallas backfield will make their defense even better.

I don't believe in team motivation. I believe in getting a team prepared so it knows it will have the necessary confidence
when it steps on a field and be prepared to play a good game... Tom Landry
