Billy the Kid
Will he cost us games this year?
Win games in the clutch like his epic Giant game?
Is there any competition coming for the job?
Do you feel good or bad about our placekicker?

I'm Willing to give billy another year. I think he will improve his leg strength and be more consistant. and yes there is a rookie from Fresno (I think) going to camp to compete with him.

I saw him his Rookie year at the Vet. Pregame the kid hits a sweet ball. Very accurate inside 40 - range iffy.

Good comparison is Matt Stover. Stover was only 72.6% first 3 years but lethal inside 40. Today after a 16 year career - at 83% overall, 138/141 inside 30
Vanderjerk #'s are sic - career 87%

Decent enough place kicker, sucks as a kick off guy however. In other words, nothing special and will be in the top 4 or 5 of least talented positions on our team.
This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

Any time a team has a kicker who struggles to be consistant on his home turf, with virtually no wind, is a liability in my book.

I agree.. Billy seems to have good leg strength for field goals in practice he needs learn to focus in game situations.
As for kickoffs we need to get anyone in that can get the ball in the endzone consistently. I hate when the opposing team is GIVEN 10-20 of BPs 'hidden yards' due to a poor kickoff.

Dallas was 9th in the league last year in kick return average coverage. I wonder net if he's really costing us 10-20 yards. We also gave up no KR TD's.
Hangtime versus distance is a coverage guys friend sometimes.
But point taken on leg strength -

Funny we gave up the least number of yards per return in the NFL and say what you want but Billy averaged 61.7 yards per kick off and average return of 17.5
Only 2 teams averaged kickoffs over 65 yards Zona and Jax zona gave up 22.1 per return and Jax gave up 19.9
Off all the teams who averaged longer kick offs than Billy (excluding zona and Jax) they averaged 1.83 yards per kick longer than billy but gave up on average 5.23 yards more in returns than Dallas. and that is 14 teams
of those 14 teams
4 averaged 64.1-64.9 per kickoff
7 averaged 63.0-63.8
3 averaged 62.1-62.9
Billy 61.7
Billy does fine on kickoffs knock him for kicks over 40 but not on kickoffs he may not get many TB's but you cant cause a fumble on a TB either.

I would rather have a kickoff go 10 yards further and give up 5 extra return yards. So your kick return average takes a hit but the opposing offense has a longer field to work with.
This is a team who is battling several major injuries to

Thanks - I sorted wrong as defensive stats. We indeed had lowest return average. On a net basis Cundiff is near the top of the league - that is what counts - Net.
