Notes:
The Texas prep saw action in 13 games his true freshman season as a reserve tight end and special-teams player in 2008. Caught six passes for 48 yards (8.0-yard average) and zero touchdowns in ’09 while playing in all 13 games (two starts). Started 11-of-14 games played in ’10 and grabbed 18-292-7 (16.2). Hauled in 27-381-2 (14.1) as a starter in all 14 contests in ’11.

Positives:
Well-proportioned build. Rare straight-line speed — is able to stretch the field vertically. Flashes playmaking ability (see 76-yard touchdown vs. Oklahoma State ’10). Finds soft spots in zones. Can extend and catch away from his body. Has a 36-inch vertical jump. Can position and get in the way. Lined up in three-point stance, split out and has special-teams experience. Good character. Durable and coachable.

Negatives:
Lacks ideal size and bulk strength to excel in line — gets outmuscled at the point of attack. Struggles to sustain (short on grip and finishing strength). Is not nasty. Average burst and hip flex. Is a bit linear and does not sink his weight fluidly. Needs to refine route running. Has concentration drops. Limited creativity after the catch. Average instincts. Not quick-handed or a natural catcher — late adjusting to the ball.

Summary:
A lean, athletic, H-Back-sized detached pass catcher, Hanna is a developmental project who needs to get stronger, develop route savvy and play more consistently. Exceptional Combine performance elevated draft status.

i've read contradictory statements. some say he makes catches that make your jaw drop and some say he drops easy catches.

"He's a real good athlete but he's inconsistent blocking and catching," a third scout said. Pre-draft visits don't tip our hand, after all. From this point forward, we should just scan scouting reports for the words "character" and "coachable." Its clear Garrett is looking for that type of makeup in his players.

Except Hanna is bigger and faster than Aaron, but you do have to worry about his heart.

If he has inconsistent hands, he really is like Hernandez. He's already ended up in Belichicks doghouse a couple of times because of drops. He had a really bad one in the Superbowl.

IRVING, Texas -- With their sixth-round pick, the Cowboys grabbed tight end James Hanna.

Pros: He's fast and athletic. Hanna ran a 4.46 40 at the combine and displays nimble feet. He shows natural burst in and out of his breaks. He picks up speed at the top end when trying to get away from defenders. Hanna has showed an ability to get better as a player. He weighed 215 pounds as a freshman and is now 252 pounds.

Cons: Hanna has trouble holding onto the ball and is an inconsistent blocker. The Cowboys need a tight end who is a good blocker, after losing Martellus Bennett in free agency. Hanna is a raw as a route runner and struggles at changing directions. Part of this is because he backed up Jermaine Gresham and didn't get plenty of snaps in the pass-oriented offense at Oklahoma.

Cowboy fit: Needs to improve his blocking and ability to catch the ball and he's got the perfect coach to help him in John Garrett, the Cowboys' tight ends coach. Garrett pushed Bennett into becoming a better blocker and player and while they clashed, you could tell Bennett improved in certain areas of his game. The Cowboys will use Hanna on a limited basis on offense until he improves on his route running.
