Default Kiper Invitational: A post draft review...

I like to take a look back on our mock draft after the actual draft has taken place and see who got value with the players they picked where they picked them. Does this exercise prove or mean much? Not really, but it's fun to do.

So here we go. If you took a player after he was taken in the draft you get a plus grade for that player. You take the guy at 10 and he actually goes 4th overall, that's a plus 6. On the flip side, any players taken before they went in the draft gets you a minus grade for that player. Then we add them all up and get an overall value score.

There were 253 players selected in the 2012 NFL Draft. Any players picked in our mock who went undrafted were assigned the 254th draft slot.

In the 4 or 5 years I've done this, a total plus grade for a class is rare. Maybe 2 or 3 guys per year. It's hard to do.

Here are this year's results.

I don't get it. You get a plus for completely missing the opportunity to draft the player you wanted?

At least with the minus picks, the person drafting got the player they wanted.

Wouldn't I "win" by picking Andrew Luck in the 7th round?

Maybe I'm just misunderstanding this exercise.

He's talking about value in relation to how the draft actually turned out. It's kind of a pointless exercise since we did the drafts before the combine even, but it's just. The fact is, we're all losers.

I think I deserve way more credit considering all I gave up to get Robert Griffin was a 2nd round pick while the Redskins gave up 2 firsts and swapped another! Where are my value points for that, huh???
We need wins, and that's all we need. I don't give a damn about anyone on this roster over wins. I'd trade Ware, Lee and Dez if it meant more wins.

That was a lot of fun. Thanks for hosting it.
Let's do it again next year!

Still, as I said before (and as RS has said), no winners or losers can be proclaimed until we find out how these players actually play.

The draft was not to predict who would draft what/when but to predcit what each team SHOULD do.....giant difference.

No doubt though, RS had a crazy-good handle on how teams where valuing certain players. His KC team got several steals.

Have to admit though, if this had been done a few weeks closer to the draft some of us may have picked differently. I really overrrated George Iloka (3rd round?..wow) it seems. Even right up to the draft, I would have picked him much lower, but it still would have been too high. I hoped we'd get him in the 5th or so and he didn't go until , I think, the 7th.

Let's check back in in 1-3 years and get a true measure of how we all did.

Broaddus doesn't like Iloka at all. He's compared him to Pat Watkins, he said if you want Pat Watkins back then draft George Iloka.

Yeah, looks like that's going to be one I would have missed on.. In any case, he could have been had way later than I took him. Of course Broaddas has been wrong hundreds of times too.
There's a bunch of changes I would have made in hind-site. This draft was a long time ago.

I'd post this whether I was first or last. Like I said in the original post it's says nothing definitively except where the players actually went in the draft.

Thank Hostile. He was like a machine keeping everything moving. We could have done a full 7 rounds in 3 days with the way he had it rolling.

It was good. It's only ever as good as the GMs in it. Most were prepared.

One note, we do it in February before the combine to make it more of a challenge. You get bigger steals and reaches that way.
