Default Dutch Warship Destroys Pirate 'Mother Ship

http://news.yahoo.com/dutch-warship-...opstories.html

Had to laugh at the size of this "mother ship" as they call it. Whats equally funny{and sad} is that the Nato warship detained them and gave them medical aid.

The other hot spot in the world gets much less attention than off of Somalia, and that's in the Strait of Malacca. You also see it pretty heavily off the coast of Nigeria and in Bangladesh.

The US Marine Corps operates a FAST unit around Malacca fairly frequently.

Hmm... Interesting. I'll have to research about that.

Malacca has been pirate territory for milennia. I recall talking to guys who worked on oil tankers that went through there in the late 70's early 80's. They were regularly boarded by pirates who stole their stuff....TVs, medical supplies, etc. They were told to just give them everything and they'd get reimbursed. Guess they didn't really want fire fights on oil tankers then either.

GGGRRRRRRR! That'd chap my you know.

I don't understand why this is a continuing problem. Escort them to prison at hard labor and blow up or confiscate their boats.
Did you know there are only 5000 Snow Leopards in the wild now and they are confined to Central Asia? However, the effective global population (those likely to reproduce) is less than half that number.

Fixed that for you, and maybe the problem in general.

Yacht piracy, specifically, armed bandits that target pleasure cruisers, are prevalent in way more areas than most realize.

Here's an article that sheds a little light on it.

Four of my buddies and I spent 3 weeks cruising the Sea of Cortez summer of 2009, fishing. We were cautioned several times to be cautious. We're all ex-Marine Corps, so we were pretty well "fortified", but we did hear a couple of pretty harrowing stories from two different couples, 1 American, 1 Norwegian, that were live-aboard yachtsmen.

Well, I can't deny that crossed my mind. My guess is there are international legal problems as well as logistical ones. Where do they go to prison? Would their country of origin imprison them or free them? Where would they be tried? If you catch them in the act then I guess you could blow the boat up or scuttle it but how often does that happen? What would be the fallout from that?

Burglary and murder with theft of possessions and even the boat occurs in many areas. Most sailing sites have info on piracy and the like.

I think they should all get blown to hell and screw the rescue efforts.
