Default Sabin: Jerry Jones facing a ‘sober reality’ as Cowboys don’t resemble a playoff team

Interesting read with statistical argument.

For YEARS the primary needs on this team have consistently been Safety on Defense and OL and WR on offense.

Year after year the GM takes a patchwork approach to these areas on the team, and year after year these are the areas that blatantly hold back the effectiveness of the other skill positions on offense and defense.

And here we are again, dealing with a #1 WR who is better as a #3 in the slot - that is, when his hamstrings let him play - an OL that has only one prominent lineman in Tyron Smith playing with backup calliber (at best) players at all other line positions, and a Safety corps that features players who can either cover in man or zone but never both, allowing offenses to easily adjust their passing scheme depending on whose in the game.

So statistical analysis is not needed to demonstrate why this team falls short; the glaring talent weaknesses at these positions that perpetuate year after year is all that's needed to tell the story of why this team - with so many prominent players at other positions - seems to have the same average showing year after year.

Trent Dilfer: "Tony [Romo] has greatness in him. I think when you talk to other people that really play the quarterback position, there's a few guys that really have incredible greatness in them, and Tony is one of them. I think the issue here is he needs more help from his teammates. I think they are not nearly as talented as people say they are, from 1 to 53. I'm talking about the total roster.”

There's a better chance of Dallas making the playoffs than there is of Jerry being sober.

I know all the Garrett lovers will disagree, but the guy is making a compelling argument to fire him. RIght or wrong, he's gonna be judged by the record of this team and it's a gross underperformer in nearly every facet. I'm shocked the defense has performed as well as it has to be candid. That said, I think Garrett is a smart guy, but I remain unconvinced he's anything but a JAG at this point...if he could show something soon, I might chnage my mind.

I have no idea how the Garrett saga is going to play out but keep in mind...

--The starting offensive line has played together in only 6 quarters of the last 60 played by the Cowboys.

--The defense has lost 4 starters to the injured reserve list. The last time a Cowboy defense has done this was back in 2001.

Injuries are part of the game, every team has to deal with them.

Translation........they are not an excuse for sucking.
As the official head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Jason Garrett is 16-16............"Its a Process of stacking good days"

2013 Prediction: "NO PLAYOFFS"

this is not the Cowboys press conference.

Injuries do negatively effect your team because they directly take talent off of the field. You can quantify that by how many games you have missed by starters and we have a ton.

Of course you don't want the team to use injuries as an excuse to lay down but losing a third of your starters to IR is going to effect play on the field.

our problem was that where we lost on O we were already weak. And that is directly because of Jerruh and company.

If we had a DECENT O line that would have helped us run the ball and control the clock and put less pressure on the D.

There have been teams before that had a lot of people on IR and injured and still had succesful seasons

They had better depth and better HC.

You garrett lovers refuse to accept reality:

he is TOTALLY inexperienced at being a HC. Frankly his overall coaching record is the least in the NFL as regards HC. BUT you keep trying to ignore that FACT.

Coaches with experience have learned HOW to deal with injuries and the like over the course of a season. Red Ball has not.

Of course Jerruh and his obsession with shiny things to the detriment of the lines has not helped
