Star Wars happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. In Episode I there is a scene in the senate where you see E.T.'s. In E.T., this race of E.T.'s is able to travel from their galaxy to the Milky Way galaxy and make it to Earth. In the future on Earth, eventually the stuff in Star Trek will occur. Hence, the same universe.

I think of Kirk flipping open his device and saying beam me up. Then I got the startac flip phone in mid 90s.
