This guy was a bad***. Only person in his platoon to survive machine gun fire on D-Day. He was the in the first wave of soldiers to storm Omaha Beach. He got stabbed by a bayonet, and killed the guy with a rock. One of the few to escape a massacre at Malmedy in the Battle of the Bulge. He survived gunshot wounds and shrapnel damage. He overcame psychological trauma and became an actor after returning home. What a bad***!!!

Here's the article I read earlier.

lost his dad at 12

his portrayal as detective moretti in dog day afternoon remains one of my alltime favorite performances by an actor.....ever.

First time I ever saw him was in "The Sting" where he played the Detective who was hounding Hooker. My favorite role he played was probably in Tootsie where he fell in love with Michael Hoffman's Dorothy character. I also liked him as Pappy O'Daniel in Oh Brother Where Art Thou?

Did not know about the WWII stuff. Makes me appreciate his work even more.

Wow, people like this are truly inspirational. I can only hope to accomplish a small fraction of what Durning has in my life.

RIP Charles.
Did you know there are only 5000 Snow Leopards in the wild now and they are confined to Central Asia? However, the effective global population (those likely to reproduce) is less than half that number.

You look up his past credits on IMBD and the guys was continuously working since the early 60's. Almost every year has at least one credit for something.

Wow, more sad news. What a great man, great actor.

I also did not know of the WWII stuff - holy cow.

They are having a private burial at Arlington National Cemetery. Deservedly so.
