Michael Lombardi hired by Cleveland Browns

The NFL Network is losing an analyst, and the Cleveland Browns are gaining a personnel executive.

The Cleveland Browns announced Friday that Michael Lombardi is the team's new Vice President of Player Personnel. A press conference is scheduled for Friday morning.

Lombardi, who worked with Bill Belichick in Cleveland during the '90s, has a history with Cleveland Browns CEO Joe Banner from their days together in Philadelphia. Lombardi also worked for Al Davis and the Raiders from 1999 to 2007. Lombardi has been in the media since then, first with the National Football Post and then full-time with NFL Network and NFL.com.

The Browns were expected to hire a general manager, and it sounds like Lombardi will essentially fill those responsibilities with a different title. Banner also might have some input, along with coach Rob Chudzinski. It will be interesting to hear at Friday's news conference who has "final say" on the roster.

The Browns are going to be absolutely amazing in evaluating from hindsight. Rest assured, whatever happens in the NFL the Browns front office knew it was going to happen all along.

Before people trash the hire... He was actually a very good GM in Cleveland back in the 80's/early 90's.

Now we know who will get Clowney in the next draft. Lombardi sucks so maybe he will find a way to draft someone else and be a bust.

Read War Room by Michael Holley. It goes into great lengths describing the Browns front office during those days, and Lombardi isn't portrayed in the best light. If he were really that great of a GM, wouldn't Belichick have brought him in to help him run the Patriots FO, or even replace Pioli, considering they worked side by side in Cleveland?

yeah if he was so good why was he out of the NFL for so long?

And not just Belichick ... Scott Pioli, Saban, Thomas Dimitroff and a few others who worked in the building with Lombardi in Cleveland. None of them hired Lombardi when they were given the keys to an organization. Dimitroff probably has a bit of an axe to grind because Lombardi fired his dad in an organizational power play.
