Thanks. I thought there might be a limit.
It makes sense because Romo's current contract was 6 years but the signing bonus was only spread out over 5 years.
They can get around some of it by giving him a large guaranteed 2nd year base salary. This would allow them to give him a smaller signing bonus. After the 1st year, they would restructure the base salary into a restructure bonus and lower base salary. This appears to be what they did with Carr's contract.
