Chat Graziano NFCE Chat Wrap: Cowboys blurbs only - 02/13/13

Weech (SoCal): You're of mindset that Doug Free falls under the addition by subtraction, which I agree with. I would argue that with the change to a 4-3, the DL goes ahead of the OL as need #1. Looking at it purely from a football x's and o's standpoint, do you think Ratliff gets out of "addition by subtraction" umbrella? It seems like Dallas needs him more than vice versa.

DG: I hear what you're saying, and if they can't keep Anthony Spencer you are probably right about the change in priorities. To me, though, the really tricky part happens if they lose Spencer AND cut Jay Ratliff. Because if they keep Ratliff, they can play Jason Hatcher at end and look for a tackle. And if they keep Spencer, they can play Hatcher at tackle and look for an end. But if they end up losing both, they have too many holes. So I think Ratliff becomes more important to keep if Spencer leaves.

Danny (VA)

What is Dallas missing for a potential deep playoff run?
Dan Graziano (12:04 PM)

Better players on the lines. Offensive and defensive.

danilo (Richmond)

Do you think dez is the best receiver in the east?
Dan Graziano (12:09 PM)

Yeah, right now, that's who I'd pick. Because Nicks couldn't get on the field in 2012, I think that's the way you have to go right now.

Andrew (Dallas)

How do you think Dallas will try to get under the cap? Anyone gone for sure?
Dan Graziano (12:13 PM)

They'll extend Romo, restructure Carr, Austin and maybe Ware. I imagine one of either Ratliff or Spencer will be gone, as well as Spears and probably Free. They can juggle, but they have to do a lot of it.

rob [via mobile]

Dallas should stay at 18 in the draft and pick best possible o lineman what say you?
Dan Graziano (12:14 PM)

I think that'd be a fine way for them to go, yes.

Tino (Mexico)

Hey Dan. Do you think the Cowboys can get enough cap space by restructuring some contracts to bring good quality FAs? they need them
Dan Graziano (12:17 PM)

No, I think they're going to have to find some bargains. If they have FA money, they'll probably use it to keep Spencer.

Weech (SoCal)

While Spencer was a DE in college, I think his agent and his assertions that he could play DE (while I think he can) are money-driven. DE's contracts merit far more money than OLB. In fact, they're 2nd highest to QB (in terms of Franchise Tag).
Dan Graziano (12:28 PM)

I think you're onto something, Weech.

Bill (AC,NJ)

If cowboys go OT and OG with both 1st and 2nd picks in the draft do we pass the hump of 8-8?
Dan Graziano (12:30 PM)

Probably, though we still have to see how that defense comes together as a Tampa 2.

Tim (GA)

With what good play we have seen from Lee and Carter last year while they where healthy and better play from the cb's of previous years. Do you think with Kiffen dallas can see a increase of turnovers made by our defense?
Dan Graziano (12:48 PM)

Yes, in fact, I think a full season from Lee and Carter would result in more turnovers. Those guys are playmakers.

Mike (Los Angeles, CA)

What do you think of a return of Chris Canty to Dallas? Make sense for both parties??
Dan Graziano (12:49 PM)

Not bad. Would improve their flexibility on the line, sure. If they could get him cheap.

poopoolighter (leesburg va)

Did Garrett really have any say in which coaches were fired or kept? Or does Jones want it to look like all of the bad decisions are being made by someone else other than him?
Dan Graziano (12:52 PM)

I think Jones wants it to look as though Garrett's making the decisions. I think Garrett wants it to look that way too. For those reasons, I doubt we'll ever get the straight story.

The majority of media guys should just give a "no comment" on anything related to the salary cap.

You don’t know what you don’t know.

Book it.

This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

Very true. Most have no clue on how it works and just spout what others say.
