Ladies and gentlemen, if you didn't see Howley play then don't attempt to criticize him! He was the most athletic, dynamic LB in the Cowboy's history. Very intelligent, very quick and terrific against both the run and pass. Along with Leroy Jordan he was the bright defensive star (along with Lily, of course) on the early Cowboy teams. He probably will never get into the HOF or ROH since very few of you young whippersnappers have ever even heard about him much less seen him play. He was easily as good as the Steelers Jack Ham.......who is naturally in the HOF

Well that's not fair because we didn't pay ANYONE their money's worth until free agency. I love hearing the stories from players about what cheap SOBs Tex and Gil were.

Actually Lee Roy Jordan got payed very well when he decided to actually stand up to Tex and management and demad a pay raise.
He purposely waited until Training Camp was over in 1974, held out and asked for a raise.
Schramm caved and gave Jordan his $100,000 but Jordan also lost because Schramm kept him out of the Ring of Honor forever.

Was it Walt Garrison who had the story about the Cowboys throwing in some nice alligator skin shoes to get him to sign his first contract, and then he found that they had billed him for them when he received his first paycheck?

Plenty of Cowboys fans love LeeRoy Jordan, and rightfully so, but Howley was so far superior to him in every way it's not a fair comparison.
Howley always came up big in the big games, including the Baltimore Super Bowl in which he remains to this day the only MVP of the super bowl ever named from the losing team...and he was the first ever defensive player MVP.
I've said many times Howley is the most deserving non HOF player the Cowboys ever had, even ahead of Hayes and Wright, though they both deserve it as well.
Guys like Cliff Harris and Drew Pearson are guys I don't really agree with as much. My only reason for thinking Pearson deserves it is because of the Steeler WRs who got in, also undeservedly, imo.

Totally agree. Nothing against Jordan, but Howley could have easily won Super Bowl MVP two years in a row. It could be argued that his performance in Super Bowl VI was even better than in SB V.
It's good to see people appreciating these great players of the 60's and 70's.
Oh, and abersonc
It's just a matter of time, isn't it?

Might of been Walt too.
I know the same thing happened to Charlie Waters. Tex came to visit him for a recruiting visit, Waters makes a positive comment about Tex's shoes. Sometime later, Waters receives the same pair of shoes in the mail.
Waters' First paycheck, a deduction for a pair of shoes.
Tex Schramm was one cheap bastid.

Of all the non-hof-cowboys fans I think Harvey Martin is the biggest snub.

Howley could be a Trivial Pursit answer for eons. a singularity. the only Superbowl MVP named from the losing team...
but he was no trivial player. the man flat turned into a demon come playoff time. i was just kid at the time - and the memory is still vivid with me. Howley was the original "49er killer"...

I never did understand why the 70s Cowboys were so under valued by the HOF. Jealousy by the voters. Too high a standard for a team with a 2-3 SB record. Coach Tom was the reason Dallas got there so often. None of it makes much sence to me. So I gave up on this debate a long time a go. Suffice it to say a Cowboys player has to be twice as good as the next best to be even considered. Three times as good to get in.
The sad part is after three wins in the 90s will any of the boys get in.

Chuck Howley and Lee Roy Jordan were both inducted into the ROH.
Howley was inducted in 75' and Jordan in 89'.
Notice how quickly Howley went in, where it took Jordan 13 years after he retired.

That has no relevance
Everyone knows Tex held a grudge against Jordan because of a vicious holdout back in 74....

Wasn't that the point you originally made, Mike? Jordan went in the ROH after Jones bought the team because Schramm would not put him in.
