Default Javiar Collins blurb

Posted on Fri, Aug. 27, 2004

Newly acquired tackle in rush to learn offense

With progress, Collins could play Saturday

PAT YASINSKAS

Staff Writer

After lunch Thursday, Javiar Collins got some spoon-feeding.

Other players were finished for the day when he took a crash course in the Carolina Panthers playbook with offensive line coach Mike Maser. Collins, acquired Tuesday in a trade with Dallas for a 2005 conditional draft pick, joined the Panthers for part of practice in Spartanburg on Wednesday. Thursday's practice in Charlotte was his first full session with the team, and he has a lot of catching up to do. Coach John Fox said the team would try to help Collins learn the offense quickly, but it remains to be seen if he'll be ready to play in Saturday's exhibition against New England at Bank of America Stadium.

"It will be close," Fox said. "... We'll just get him as oiled up as we can. There's some carryover from their system to our system."

Collins said he was happy to join the Panthers after being stuck with the third team in Dallas. The Panthers lost right tackle Adam Meadows to retirement during training camp, and replacement Matt Willig has been knocked out by a bruised knee. Melvin Tuten is expected to start Saturday, and Collins could get some playing time.

"They've got a lot of guys in Dallas," Collins said. "If they need help here, then that works out for the Panthers and for me."

I like this kid and I wish him good luck. This is how you leave an organization with class.

No sniping or blaming the coach or other players. It was unfortunate that he got traded but he didn't burn a bridge in the process.

AGreed, very nice by Javiar, despite my dislikeness of the panthers, i will root for the guy. Anybody that donned the star at once and never put down the organization will always be in someway a cowboy to me. Good luck javiar, and thanks for taking the high road out, unlike Mr. Blade and company.

Parcells did him a favor with the trade. He'll have a better chance to make team now.

Willie, Hambrick, and Quincy to some degree should take a page from Javier's book on how to move on with class and dignity.

BTW, aren't you all glad we didn't sign Adam Meadows now??!??!

Those threes were released but Collins were traded so it may be why he reacted better than the other three.

Easier to have dignity when you were 3rd string, inactive for almost the entire season last year, had two more linemen drafted in front of you this year, not to mention fa signings, and you were traded for a draft pick.

I see no comparison with the other 3 guys who were all starters on a 10-6 playoff team and were cut outright.......zipppppppp.

No comparison? With all due respect, I agree the situations were different...but they all ended with the same outcome. Hambrick asked for his release and now runs his mouth in the Bay Area and Quincy forced his own release in reality knowing full well the ramifications of violating the substance abuse policy again.

Blade didn't participate in the off season workout program...which translates into basically "quitting" the team.

Collins could have easily pointed out those things the team did to him that you mention (Drafting picks, FA signings, made inactive) and been bitter and claimed that he wasn't really "given a chance" or "treated fairly", but he didn't. So I don't think it was "easier" for him to leave with dignity. Perhaps he's just more mature and professional than the other guys. In order to have dignity, you have to be dignified to begin with.

We tried to trade Hambrick but did not get any offers.
