Default DMN Archer: Observation deck: Gauntlet daunting (Notes)

04:19 AM CDT on Tuesday, August 1, 2006

By TODD ARCHER / The Dallas Morning News

• Players hate the Gauntlet, a rubber-foamed contraption they have to run through. Drew Bledsoe skipped his turn, running on the outside before heading to position drills. A veteran can get away with that, but if it were Terrell Owens, then much more would've been made about it.

• Rookie nose tackle Samuel Taulealea, kicker Shaun Suisham and new kickoff guy Tyler Fredrickson took a dip in the hot tub before the evening practice.

Mike Vanderjagt missed two field goals Monday, giving him three in two days. Before his last miss even hit the ground, he groaned, "Oh, my God."

• The hit of the day belonged to safety Abram Elam, who blew up tight end Tony Curtis on a run to the left. It was such a big hit that the whole secondary yelled Elam's name and prompted an "attaboy" from coach Bill Parcells. Later, Elam drilled receiver J.R. Tolver too hard and drew Parcells' wrath.

• Parcells broke out a new T-shirt for camp. This one reads: Every day is hump day. It includes a picture of a camel. Parcells said the first five-day stretch of camp is the toughest on the players mentally and physically.

• The play of the day belonged to rookie safety Pat Watkins . After initially biting on a run play, Watkins, 6-5, was able to cover enough ground on a flea-flicker to intercept a Tony Romo pass.

• After rookie tight end Anthony Fasano was hit by safety Roy Williams, cornerback Terence Newman yelled, "That's a love tap, 47." Some love tap.

• Tolver and safety Keith Davis got into a brief skirmish. Parcells hates those dust-ups because he doesn't think they are part of the game. Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer got on Davis for it, too.

• For the first time in training camp, Parcells' news conference didn't come with a question related to Owens.

T.O. Watch: Good blocking

02:11 AM CDT on Tuesday, August 1, 2006

By TODD ARCHER / The Dallas Morning News

Keyshawn Johnson took pride in his blocking. He wasn't afraid to mix it up with defensive ends and outside linebackers on running plays.

On Monday, Owens did a pretty good Johnson imitation. During a run, Owens put his 224-pound frame in the way of defensive end/linebacker Greg Ellis, who weighs 270 pounds, to open a hole. The block was so impressive that it drew a low-five from receivers coach Todd Haley.

Later in the same drill, Owens had some words for Thomas Johnson after Johnson was beat on a run, "You're still in bed 92. You're not awake."

Is this really news that needs to be reported?

It shows they probably aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer.

Good stuff TO. There's room on this team for leadership especially on the offensive side of the ball.

OMG Not this, sheesh. What do we have to do to get a decent kicker???

Your kidding right? Vanderjagt is working with a new snapper and a new holder who spends most of his time practicing to be a quarterback. It will take some time for that group to get on the same page completely.

Romo is turning into a INT machine.

Thats what scares me about Romo he doesn't have much of an arm and a rangy guy like Watkins will eat guys like him alive.

Correct me if I am wrong but that is 3 interceptions Watkins has got off of Romo.
