Default DMN Camp Blog: Parcells Sat. PC Notes, Romo, Vandy

Romo must step up

No. 2 quarterback Tony Romo was told by Bill Parcells to step up his game. Well, does he have to do it in today's scrimmage?

"I think the real indicators would be more the preseason game," Parcells said. "But sometimes the situation in the preseason games is a little unfair, too."
Parcells isn't sure if Romo will start any preseason games but expects him to play a lot.

Vanderjagt and the Mendoza Line

Bill Parcells has told kicker Mike Vanderjagt about the Mendoza Line, which in baseball is hitting below .200. We don't know Vanderjagt's field goal kicking stats in camp, but I doubt he is under 20 percent.

"I haven’t asked him anything other than if he’s habitually below the Mendoza Line," Parcells said. "He didn’t know [what that was], but he knows now. I was just teasing him, of course."

Notes from Parcells' Saturday news conference

• Terrell Owens will miss the 90-play scrimmage today. He's undergoing an MRI on his left hamstring. Coach Bill Parcells said he's not too concerned about it.

• Guard Stephen Peterman (left ankle) and safety Justin Beriault (concussion) will miss the scrimmage. Peterman is wearing a boot on his left ankle and said he could return on Monday. (I saw Peterman in the parking lot and asked him)

• Pro Bowl left tackle Flozell Adams worked with the second team yesterday and Parcells said he's feeling better physically.

"But right now I’m just trying to get somebody ready to play against Seattle," Parcells said. "Flozell, I’m a little worried about him. I don’t want to lose my quarterback up in Seattle, so I’m going to get somebody ready. I just have Pat McQuistan behind him, so I put Rob Petitti over there to get him some reps."

• Parcells said he's a little concerned with the depth at wide receiver behind Terry Glenn, Patrick Crayton and Owens. He said he knows what Terrance Copper can do, and Skyler Green would have to make the team as a return man. So, Sam Hurd, who Parcells said has good hands, Jamaica Rector, Austin Miles and J.R. Tolver are battling for a few spots. Parcells calls Tolver "Junior."

• Parcells said he's not too concerned with the struggles of kicker Mike Vanderjagt. He also said he's not sure if he will employ more two-a-day practices next week.

Pardon the induction...

Sorry if I've seemed a little distant today. I was asked to make a guest appearance on Rick Gosselin's blog during Rayfield Wright's acceptance speech.

Let me give you a quick rundown on what to expect from this blog today:

• At 2 p.m. Pacific time, the Cowboys will being their practice, which will include 90 scripted plays. If I had to guess, Drew Bledsoe will receive about 20 plays, Tony Romo will receive 30 plays, Drew Henson will receive 25 and Jeff Mroz will take the leftovers.

Sadly, the Yale grad has seemed overwhelmed in camp.

• Expect one of the longest and most entertaining controlled scrimmage reports ever compiled from Todd Archer and me (I try to stay away from overselling things).

• OK, OK. We'll give you some news on rookie linebacker Bobby Carpenter. One quick piece of advice, though: We don't rush to respond to e-mails that begin with, "What's your problem?"

• What are some things you want us to keep our eye on during this afternoon's scrimmage?
