When I see top 100 lists like this, the first thing I do is go through it and highlight the players I like for the Cowboys on the list... the players listed in bold font here would be my targets from this list...

Next up is to come up with a mock draft, based entirely on these rankings... I'm certainly not saying this particular set of rankings is ultra-accurate, I'm just saying let's play a game of "what if", as in, what if this list is pretty accurate?? That's what I'm gonna do right now:

2nd round, pick 51... the options are Max Unger, Patrick Chung, Troy Kropog, Phil Loadholt and Jonathan Luigs... my choice would be Luigs or Unger... Unger is higher rated, but he's actually project as the 47th player here, and after a really solid week at the Senior Bowl, he's likely to continue rising the charts... so I'll go with Luigs here... don't know how CBS has him listed at 302 pounds, most of the draft boards I've seen list him in the 315 pound range... playing for Arkansas, his run blocking is more advanced than his pass-blocking, and I want the Boys to emphasize their running game next year... he's also got great speed for an interior lineman, so he should be able to pull and trap with some efficiency...

Round 3, pick 69... the options are Darry Beckwith, Ron Brace, Kraig Urbik, Tyrone McKenzie, Michael Hamlin, Derik Pegues, Eric Wood, Andy Levitre, Fenuki Tupou, and Jarett Dillard... I really like both Urbik and Tupou, but if I've just gone offensive line with the first pick, I probably wouldn't go for another blocker much before the 5th round... at first, I didn't care much for Brace, I thought he'd be too slow for the NFL, but he sure seemed fast enough to dominate the higher level of competition at the Senior Bowl... so since the Boys badly need a massive, clog up the middle nose tackle, I'll got with Ron here... I'm sorely tempted to say Dillard, but again, WR is not that big a priority this offseason...

Round 4, pick 97... the options are Jarron Gilbert, Domonique Johnson, Antoine Caldwell, Trevor Canfield and Sherrod Martin... the Boys need a safety, and I think that's where Martin will wind up in the NFL... it'll be nice to give Demarcus Ware another kid from his alma mater to pal around with, LOL...

So, what do you guys think?? Would you be satisfied with a center/guard, a nose tackle and a free safety with our first three picks?? To me, that addresses a number of offseason needs, without reaching at the pick the Cowboys have...

I'll tell you what, though, on rereading my list, I'm not really all that excited about any of the prospects at pick 51, but I noticed I have a LOT of targets in the 68 to 88 range, so I might think hard about trading down a little with our 2nd rounder, adding a 5th or 6th rounder in the process, then going with Brace and Urbik or Brace and Tupou instead...

Just two little quibbles here-- first off, Vaughn SERIOUSLY dissed the Cowboys at the Senior Bowl, just talked trash... I wouldn't bring him into that locker room after what he said even as an undrafted rookie free agent... screw him, if that's how he feels he'd just tick off most of the team... second, I want NO part of a 290 pound OT, especially not in the first 100 picks... you might occasionally find an offensive lineman that light in the seat who can play in the NFL, but you'll waste a lot of picks on such prospects before you do...

I'm real fond of Dillard and Gilbert, though...

taking SB's advice, here's mine. Although I wouldnt necessarily draft some of the guys where this board has them rated. I bolded a couple gys in the high 20's/30's because they could potentially slip and we could potentially move up for soemone if they are really liked by the team. Also wonder why Alabama FS Rashad Johnson isnt listed, he's probably my favorite safety in the draft.

I'm starting to think we just NEED a safety, but not necessarily a free safety.

Rashad Johnson is my favorite, because I think a center fielder would be ideal, but Ken Hamlin is such a pathetic run defender that we would be helping ourselves if we added someone like William Moore or Patrick Chung--strong safety types.

I think depending on what happens with free agency, we might be drafting two safeties...maybe one of them is a hybrid CB/S type, but I believe we'll be adding more than one back there.

Beatty has great feet, but is too light. In two years he could be ready to take over for Flozell. Hopefully he will slide in the draft because of his weight.

Jackson is a possible alternative if Canty negotiations don't work out, and they don't see a nose tackle they like (or get), so Ratliff remains at nose. (And he slides or they trade up some).

Haven't seen enough to really distinguish between Sintim, English, and Brown. This is supposed to be a good draft for that type of player.

Chung or Delmas could really help at safety. Chung looked surprisingly good when covering receivers one on one in the drills during Senior Bowl week. One player I would absolutely stay away from at safety is Will Moore. He looked completely overmatched in pass coverage. I had recurrent nightmares of Roy Williams (only worse) watching him practice. He has a high potential to completely bust IMO.

Brace is a two down NT. His only move when rushing the passer is a bull rush. That ain't gonna get it done in the NFL. Having said that, he could be disruptive against the run. I'd like to see the Cowboys draft him--particularly in the 3rd or later.

I included Derrick Williams and Darius Butler sheerly on talent--not need.

Williams is a real talent IMO. Fast, and really quick in/out of cuts. Plus he's a Punt/Kickoff returner. Williams may be my favorite player in the draft for the second/third round. I'll be watching his combine times.

Darius Butler looks like a good cover corner. Really good feet. Maybe not as much help in run support.

Another player I would prefer the Cowboys to stay away from is Ramses Barden. He couldn't get any separation during the week at the Senior Bowl. I see a high bust factor here too. He may have more speed than Mike Williams, but that's who I think of when looking at him (regardless of draft position).

I haven't seen enough of the OL to properly form an opinion. In the senior bowl practices, the guys who might be there in the second and later looked good sometimes, and bad others.

I've seen speculation (Mayock, I think) that he may fall as far as the 4th or even 5th round based on his performance last week. He did NOT have a good week.
