Mac Engel said, from what he hears and sees that the cowboys like sean smith and that to get him the cowboys may have to trade up. Mac went on to say that tom ciwoskiw head scout has his say in war room to set up the draft board, but that jerry jones might be able to sit for 10 hours before cowboys draft, so jones might trade up;

If he's even teasing us at pick 40, the trigger better be pulled. I'll start him at CB and have Jenkins,Scandrick and Smith as my future. Newman is still top flight but he's only got 2 years max IMO.

In my opinion, they would be looking at Smith at FS. He's not even close to being in Jenkins' or Scandricks's league at CB, imvso. Mike Jenkins was an undisputed top tier CB and carried a top 15 grade from Dallas. Terence Newman is going to keep playing at a very high level as long he can stay healthy. He's the leader. There is no expiration date on Terence Newman.

Smith has long legs and is slow in and out of his breaks. He's a bit raw, and if he's going to play CB in the NFL, he's going to have to play for a team like Oakland or Green Bay. Smith isn't going to do well playing off or in zone. He's going to have to press. Plus, he's going to have to get stronger to play more physical in the NFL.

I think he's a bit overrated as a CB, and he says he doesn't want to play FS. Also, I've read where he has some maturity issues. I don't know if it's true or not.

The team Smith goes to will affect his bust potential, imo.

I'd rather have Delmas or McBath than trade up for a guy who doesn't want to play FS.

How connected is Mac when he can't get the player's name or school right?

Like 41, I'm not high on Smith as a corner. Especially not for a team that's not primarily a cover-2 defense, which we aren't.

I think he projects to Safety but he wants to play CB. It's really too bad too. There was once Free Safety for the Broncos named Steve Atwater and he was very simular in build and stature. Atwater was probably a bigger hitter but I think that Smith could be that kind of Free Safety if he just decided to be a Free Safety.

You know....I think we may be trying to find a hybrid CB/S. I think as teams pass more, and use more receiving TEs and RBs, that demand will be there for players that can cover and tackle..

Whew...that was a bad sentence.

We toyed with the idea of putting Scandrick and Ball there, but those guys are too small. Scandrick is too valuable a CB to risk injury to.

A player like Smith works beautifully here. He can cover TEs....and some WRs....He also has safety size.

I think Smith solves two problems for us. Depth at CB and Safety.

Yes. I think you are right. If they got Smith, I think they are going to play him in a safety role and put him on the TE. He's big and has good speed for that job. He would give you depth at CB and provide FS play.

Another player who could fill that role is DeAngelo Willingham. The Eagles worked him out. I hope the Cowboys are taking notice of a FS/CB who is 5-11, 217 and runs a 4.46 and is physical. He wouldn't cost as much. He has real long arms.

The Dolphins have met with Smith 3 times. I don't think Dallas will nab him anyway, but who knows.

If there is one thing I am sure of it is that Newman will get hurt this year. The guy is as fragile as glass. By the way now in his 30's is on the downside.

How could anyone believe a word that Mac Engel writes or says? Has he ever been right, on anything?

He's one of the worst beat writers covering Dallas, that is saying a LOT. He's one of the least disciplined & most incompetent writers I have ever seen.

He could be completely right on Sean Smith (even though he is best suited in a Tampa 2 system), but the guy is still a hack.

Well, if somebody can play Safety in a Tampa2 (I'm assuming this is what you mean), then they can pretty much play Free Safety in any scheme IMO. The safeties is that scheme are excellent athletes and usually very intelligent. I'd be very happy with that.
