Key knows more about football than just WR. I think he mentioned 8 of the nine positions that Parcells ref. we need to address this offseason. I would not be surprised if we take a CB with the 1st pick. I recall Stephen saying that from a value standpoint, you like to address DE and CB with high draft picks.

Just food for thought...
Nonetheless, a fairly informative interview...

If you listen to Key and read the Stephen Jones' quote, there is a chacne that we take a CB with 1a, 1b or the 2nd rd pick. And think, you maybe able to kill two birds with one stone by taking a CB that can return punts. And, if we take a CB with one of those picks, does that now mean Newman is available to return punts? Either way, it looks like we may eventually have a dynamic return man with (Newman or rookie CB/returner)
FYI...
Pac Man Jones, Justin Miller or Antrel Rolle have all returned punts.

We have a CB who was a demon returning punts...but I can understand the hesitance to use him as a returner...although Sanders returned punts and never got hurt that way...
Key sure was open in the way he spoke...he's a bright guy...and pulled no punches...

Parcells said he didn't like Newman's body type. He thinks he's too fraile and too valuable to the D. I would agree that lossing Newman is akin to having a 40+ QB and no running game to spark your O. You catch my drift....
Maybe if we go CB, then Newman will return punts. JMO...

The CB should be chosen with 1b or #2. There will be a lot of very good CBs on the board in this range and definitely represents the strength of the draft. I wouldn't mind tradeing down a few spots with 1b, maybe picking up a 3rd rounder (of even a move like we did last year to get Julius) and then picking a CB at the bottom of the first or the top of the second.
I wouldn't worry too much about thoosing a CB for his return ability. Frazier was okay at PR in limited duties and should be better if he no longer is the starter at RCB. R Lee was good on KORs - lots of good returns, no turnovers.

Norm dominated the conversation, and sort of directed the topics. So, in some ways Stevens responses were a bit forced by Norm. Anyhow, here is a recap:
- Cowboys will be shopping for safety, DT, back-up RB.... positions that are better value, less expensive, but will still reduced needs in draft. therefore draft picks can be more focused in more expensive positions (DE, CB).
Well I guess Steven is the one who got the brains in the family as that is the most sensical thing I have ever heard come out of the FO at Valley Ranch.
The only thing I will say is that I wouldn't mind shopping for a good pass rushing DE who could come for Berry type money - Reggie Hayward from the Broncos or maybe Darren Howard from the Saints (Saints already got Will Smith and Charles Grant at DE so they probably won't franchise him). I agree in exercising some caution with a guy like Abraham who has had some issues with DUI and the injury bug - this guy is going to get more than Kearse = $20M SB, highest paid def player in the league.

I think the value in this year's draft is going to be at Corner, but I worry that Bill won't feel like investing another high pick into the secondary.

Corner does seem like a very deep position in the draft this year to be thinking about spending one of our first rounders on one. Rolle is rated so high that if he dropped to 11 then you might want to think about it. But one of the other 1st round rated CBs is bound to drop to early second and we could get one then if thats the thinking.

authority...
I think he has storng input, but not all. Based on Stephen's comments, I think we will at least explore a CB. I veiw this CB draft something akin to the RB draft last year. There are 4-5 players that are close in ability. We can do one of two things...
1. Trade 1a or 1b and and move down in the draft and pick up an additional 2nd or a 3rd depending on how far down we move. We still may get one of the two guys we want at CB
2. Stay put and take best CB on board.
Staying put is the most unlikely, since both Jerry and Bill have a history of trading down to acquire more picks. Plus, I think this draft's deepest rankings are between 2nd - 4th rounds. And our 2nd round pick is a de facto 1st round pick because it's so high. Given that, and us not having a 3rd, I look for us to trade down and acquire more picks.
The DE can be addressed with the 1b pick or the original 2nd. I think Merriman, Pollack, both Cody's and Tuck will all be there. At least, 2 of the bunch should be available for us to pick.
I look for us to exploit's Parcells words, "we need dynamic, catalytic, opportunistic players on defense. We need pressure players, I think you call them Play-Makers".

We need a playmaker at WE this year and another in a couple of years. If Crayton steps up, that is one. All we are is a team loaded with #2 WR types.
This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

but what do we need more. WR, CB, S, RT, RG, RDE, NT... I mean the list goes on and on for this team. IMO, we need the following: (in no order of importance)
Most Pressing:
1. Pass Rushing DE
2. CB
3. NT (wide body)
4. FS
5. QB
6. RT
Clearing an upgrade is needed:
1. #1 WR (Crayton may make a good #2)
2. MLB
3. FB
4. OLB
5. Back up RB
Some of these players may already be on the team and we don't know.
JMO, but we have a lot of needs which is a clear indication that trading down in the draft, coupled with select FA's, should be in our near future.
