Default Great to see this thread...

...as I have always been an advocate of Chan Gailey's tenure and feel that the '99 team was going to be downright special before Irvin's injury and the resulting domino effect that had us playing Jason Tucker and Rocket (miscast as a #1 receiver) by the wild card game against the Vikes at the end of the season. This game showed what Gailey's offense could be all about. This game also was yet another example of the fact that we actually scored over 30 points fairly regularly in the first season and a half under Chan's guidance, which lots of people forget. I never agreed with lumping him in with Switzer and Campo, I think Gailey was on a different level altogether.

All that being said, I am currently Direct TV-less and was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me out w/ a copy of the game if I sent them a cassette and paid for shipping?

I agree but frankly watching that game last night made me miss Aikman. I agree that if Irvin doesn't go down, this team starts 4-0 and the sky is the limit.

It was nice to see a Cowboys win on NFL TV.

I honestly believe there are two things that could have dramatically altered those horrible 5-11 seasons.

One was if Irvin hadn't gone down that year, with him and Rocket, the Cowboys could have kicked *** in what had become a watered down league of parity. We probably would have seen an offense that for the first time focused more on passing with Aikman to Rocket/Irvin since Emmitt was starting to wear down.

The other thing was if we would have drafted Randy Moss. Same effect but a lot earlier in their careers.

Default Chan's Downfall was 9/12/99

I remember the game very well it was the game when I gave up on Chan Gailey.

For the benefit of those who have a fuzzy memory of 1999. This was a game in which Chan's disenchantmnet with Michael Irvin was rawly evident on the field.

He was thwarted by JJ during the preseason as he tried to run 88 off after the scissors incident, you may recall his comments that Michael will have to earn his starting spot.

Emmitt is seething the whole game as he's being pulled for Chris Warren and was running w/o a fullback,---and so were we in the bar as we watched it--Chan's dink and dunk play calling (we ended the 3rd w/ three and out on 3 dinks including an under thrown short pass to Rocket on 3rd down) and pulling of Emmit was infuriating the team and....low and behold down by 3 TDs we put in Emmit with a fullback and ran,ran ran to start the 4th. That started the rally.

Troy certainly showed the Q-blinded what a quarterback is supposed to look like-but he was also playing a mistake laden game trying to execute Chan's passes in the flat.
They ran the ball well in the fourth and then Troy to Michael opened up with two gorgeous TD passes the second one being a "Throw it up and Green can't cover me" pass that is the signature of Michael's career as a Cowboy.

Both teams botched their last possessions and could have won it in regulation, but in overtime the effect of the establishment of the run in the early 4th Q made itself shown on that beautifully executed play fake.

Darryl Johnston speaking on FoxSports 1190 two years ago addressed this game and Chan's inablity to utilize the big three properly by trying to squeeze the Cowboys into a short pass offense, diminishing Emmit Smith's skills by trying to make him run wide, forcing Troy into a short passing game and redistributing the passing offense to smaller quicker WRs like Ernie Mills and Wayne McGarrity.

Chan Gailey had way more to work with than Cap-strapped Dave Campo I'd take Campo over Gailey anytime.

Well, that was just about the worst memory I could think of from the Norv era. As soon as Emmitt took them down for that first fourth quarter TD I knew we were in trouble. Norv never knew how to coach defense, and his DCs were always from the 'bend and then break' school of coaching.

Good old Darrell Green. He was the ONLY starter in the entire secondary that didn't have to leave the game because of leg cramps. Leg cramps! That's why there was a freakin backup safety in there biting on play-action in OT. Unbelieveable.
Hail to the Redskins!

Snider is absolutely ruining the Redskins. It's disgusting. I wonder how many long time Skins fans will eventually bail.

Ahhh yes Hostile. Great minds do indeed think alike.

Nick Saban is a Belichick clone. The perfect replacement for BP...down the road that is.

It is definitely time to put down the crackpipe.

Surely you can't mean this.
