Carthon to be Browns' offensive coordinator, source says

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - One of the worst-kept secrets at the Super Bowl is that New England defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel is going to be the Cleveland Browns next head coach.

He's planning to take a Cowboys assistant coach with him.

Offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon, who also coaches running backs, is expected to be named the Browns' offensive coordinator once Crennel officially accepts the job, a Cowboys source said Wednesday evening.

Carthon and Crennel have a long history together.

Carthon was a running back for the Giants when Crennel was a member of the coaching staff in the '80s. They worked together as assistants under coach Bill Parcells with New England and the New York Jets in the '90s.

"I haven't been given any information about any movement on our coaching staff today," Cowboys public relations director Rich Dalrymple said.

The source said the Cowboys recently granted Cleveland permission to approach Carthon, who still has a year left on is contract, about the position. Carthon has been an offensive coordinator the past three seasons - Detroit in 2002 and the past two seasons in Dallas - but he has never called plays.

Parcells has called the plays the past two seasons for the Cowboys, and quarterbacks coach Sean Payton has had a big role in the passing game.

Carthon will call the plays in Cleveland, according to the source.

The Cowboys' offense ranked 14th in the NFL - 20th in rushing and 15th in passing - this season, despite not having key offensive performers Terry Glenn and Julius Jones for long stretches of the season.

When Carthon goes, it will mark the fourth assistant coach to leave the staff. Parcells fired offensive line coach George Warhop and defensive ends coach Jim Jeffcoat and declined to renew kicking coach Steve Hoffman's contract.

Good for Carthon.

I am interested to know how BP feels about this, but we will probably never know.

For the Cowboys though, really we just need to add a RB Coach to replace him.

Why not? If he does retire would he be a good RB coach? I think its worth looking at.

Doubt that. As of now, Emmitt is looking to help buy the Minnesota Vikings. Doubt he will have time, or lower himself to RB's coach.

Damn...I was hoping Carthon would be a head coach candidate after BP left. I just think he has the disposition and attitude of a head coach

I hope he does well if he does go to Cleveland

I wouldn't mind bringing in Richie Anderson. He could do it all - run, block and catch. He has a great attitude and a good work ethic. He apparently did a great job mentoring QC in 2003 and Julius last year. He clearly knows what Parcells expects and wants.

He is also probably too old and too injured to be counted upon next year as a RB.

Maybe so, Eskimo, though an article a couple of weeks ago made it sound like he wasn't ready to retire yet...

I bet Parcells is really bummed about this. He might even wonder why Mo would leave him.

Players often want to hang around too long - Parcells should offer him the coaching gig and take away the playing gig at the same time.

I think Richie did a great job in 2003 - I think we asked too much of him early last year and his body paid the price. RB is a young man's game because of the pounding you regularly take from guys that weigh about 100 pounds more than you.

We need to move on here from a player personnel POV. We need a proper 3rd down RB who is a good receiver out of the backfield and who can run some draws - preferably want someone with some big-play potential who can nevertheless do an adquate job blocking.

We also need a proper blocking FB for 3rd and shorts. I wouldn't be entirely averse to trying out a backup LB or DL in the slot if someone shows some natural talent and doesn't mind doing the job on a part-time basis.

But remember, according to Jerry, there won't be any more coaching changes.

If Dallas needs to replace him as offensive coordinator, I hope they bring in someone well qualified. Someone who can call the plays and create a cohesive offense. They seem to be using the group think approach recently, and all that has produced is ineffective output on that side of the ball. Bill should hand over the reigns to a respected offensive mind.

Bringing in some ex-player with no coaching experience is lunacy. If they want an internship to learn the ropes of coaching, fine. Bring in a qualified replacement for the title of offensive coordinator. Now that signing day has passed, I'm sure there are a myriad of options in the college ranks (as well as several good candidates at the NFL level).

Unless they part on bad terms, I believe coach Mo will remain a top candidate to take over for Bill Parcells whenever he steps down as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

And this move good be very beneficial for Carthon, IMO.

To date, he's been an offensive coordinator in title only with two seperate clubs.

In both cases, play calling and coordination of the passing game fell on others' shoulders.

The experience should be helpful if Carthon is ever looked uopn as a head coaching candidate in the future, IMO.

Superb idea.

Hopefully, Anderson's desire to play and risk further injury to his neck will be overtaken by the chance to join Bill Parcfells' staff.

I hope Big bill feels Richie could be just as valuable on the sideline as he was on the field when healthy in 2003.

Who says he can not be a head coaching candidate if he leaves. Actually I think it would increase his chances because he will get the chance to call plays. If the Browns O does well it will just help him. JJ knows him, and if he feels he is worthy than nothing is stopping him from still interviewing him for the job.

Yep, was just confirmed by Fox Sports Southwest. Carthon is expected to head to Cleveland and take over as O-coordinator after Romeo Krennel is named the head coach.

Fine by me. I always like Sean Payton better.
