3 steps...

Thanks to ImageShack for Free Image Hosting

The foundational image. Note the layer box contains only one layer, "Layer 1"

The image you wish to fade...note the layers box now contains and additional layer, "Layer 2"

The image of Tom Landry has been faded. Note the sliders in the Layers window have been adjusted. Move the sliders until you are satisfied with how the image looks.

Note: I always save my files in layers before compressing them just in case I want to go back and make changes.

The above steps can be utilized for additional layers as well. When doing so, please keep in mind that placing a new image either over or under and existing layer will change the presentation.

This is a fairly simple was to ghost images in different layers.

good job juke, I have a question about it. The first layer is your backround,when you put the Landry picture up,how are you opening it? from your pictures folder,or a new layer. I tried doing it with a backround and a pic I opened from my pics,I was on a 2nd layer but I couldn't change the opacity. Thanks in advance

Open up another picture from one of your folders...

Go to "select"..."ALL"...copy the picture...the go to your first pic and paste it over it...you'll immediately see a second layer...

We have many good image creators here... Juke, Irvinite, Jacs... and others...

These guys will all tell you... Photoshop/Paint Shop Pro isn't rocket science... most all of us learned from trial and error...

Jump in and don't be afraid...

In adding to Juke's tutorial... I would say that you have to adapt to what you are trying to accomplish... Juke was giving a quick lesson... and dead on...

Coupled with that... I would say it is VERY important to learn how to isolate backgrounds from images that you want to include... there are many ways to do this... just plain old simple eraser can do alot...

Juke would have, had he wanted to go more in depth, made the image "sepia" and feathered the bottom of the image... I know this because I see his fine work often...

Again... these aren't hard... if you spend an honest couple of hours a day reading tutorials on the net for just ONE week... you can get a REAL good start on mastering either of these programs... and you would get something more like this:

And yep...I wanted to give the Layering 101 course...

I think it would be great if you had a chance to do a few screen captures of how you feathered the above image etc...

Separating backgounds from images...uh, there's a phrase used to describe that..."tedious pain in the butt"...

But for a graphic to look pro, it has to be done with great care....everyone has a different way of accomplishing this...some, like myself, use different methods on the same pics....

Yep... seprating images from the background is BY FAR the most tedious aspect of creating original artwork... but as Juke and others will tell you, it is the key to getting the effect that you want... after you create a concept and seperate the image from the background... it is all about playing with effects, plug-ins, layer postion...

I would have done screen caps on the process, but unlike most here I primarily use Paint Shop Pro with Photoshop as support... I do this because although Photoshop has superior compression skills, Paint Shop Pro is equally superior in writing scripts... (again... these aren't hard to learn)...

The main key is learning the tools and what they do... there is AMPLE resources on the net... DON'T read the respective "Instruction Manuals" as they are mostly technical and poorly written... read real-world user advice...

Between these two, you can link to virtually hundreds of sites w/ all sorts of tutes. But these two are the first I reference from my favs list when I'm looking for graphics info.

I really enjoy checking out everyone's work. I started using Photoshop because I came across this really cool fantasy football website that had custom helmets with team pages, etc. I wanted to do it myself, since i'm a pretty hard core FF junkie. I created my own website (woohitz.com) and taught myself to use Photoshop. I can only do a few things and havent messed around with it too much until recently, after I started noticing all the cool stuff you guys create. I bought myself a book a couple of years ago, and lost it. I think it was called "Photoshop 7 Down & Dirty Tricks". and highly recommend it. Here's a couple of things I made. The second one is the Lombardi Trophy with blended team logos of past league champions.
