Hindsight on past drafts
Since not much action lately, decided to go back and look at past drafts, concentrating on the 1st round. Starting with 1982 through 2004 and only looking at players picked in the 1st round, which draft would you re-do if you could.
1. 1983. Draft Marino over Jeffcoat. No question as to why.
2. 2003. Draft Leftwich over Newman. I know it's early, but I see Leftwich being pretty darn good in the next year or two and when it's all said and done something special. Newman I think will only be good his whole career.

Leftwich is garbage.
Jacksonville will be looking for a new QB in 2 years.

I have yet to see anything from him so far that even shows that he has the potential to be something special. Still not sure what everyone's fascination with him is.

I think Leftwich is pretty good but I could see him being oft-injured and incapable of winning the important games. I think he'll be enough of a tease to keep his job but frustrate coaches. I do enjoy watching him play though.
Still left to accomplish:
sign OT Winston or G Moore

It is so easy to second guess drafting. The most important thing is to remember the exact situation the team was in when it made the pick you are questioning. That is true with any team and with any pick.
This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

You left a lot of hindsights out going that far back... and there are ramifications...
Had we drafted Marino, would we have been in position/considered Aikman?
If you want to go back that far you can add in other scenarios... we also passed on Darrell Green...
Permit my drafnik side to come through...
In '84 we took Billy Cannon over Greg Bell and Boomer Esiason...
In '85 we took Kevin Brooks over William Perry and Randall Cunningham...
We can fast-forward to '89... we took Aikman and passed over Deion... Barry Sanders... Derrick Thomas...
The point is that had he taken Marino... more than likely we would have never assembled what is arguably the greatest team in NFL history...
It does make a difference... the flapping of a butterfly's wings makes a difference in the draft... it worked out well for us... no regrets...
Heck... in the 1979 draft we were poised to take Joe Montana in the 4th... think that would have made history had SF not taken him in the third?

Billy Cannon IMO was destined to greatness but you can't argue with the other outcomes. Not sure it's fair to look back that far and disgard injured players. Who knows and just a thought.

Brooks bah. Perry so so even if he grew up in SC. Randall was very good.

[View Full Quote]Aikman stands with the others...just different jobs. All the others great but you can't get them all.

See above.
Did you know there are only 5000 Snow Leopards in the wild now and they are confined to Central Asia? However, the effective global population (those likely to reproduce) is less than half that number.
