Raiders making bid at Howard
The Raiders have apparently become the latest team trying to snag defensive end Darren Howard away from the Saints. Howard, whom New Orleans tagged as its franchise player this off-season, has been on the trading block with the Cowboys mentioned as the team most likely to acquire him. But Oakland has talked recently with New Orleans, dangling players such as its own franchise player CB Charles Woodson (who carries his own $10.5 cap number for 2005) or another disgruntled CB Phillip Buchanon (who would like to be traded). Word is the Saints would prefer to make a deal before the draft, in hopes of also adding another pick from this year's draft. If a Howard deal doesn't happen by the draft, the Saints plan on keeping him.

Well, that's certainly an interesting twist. But I don't see the Saint's taking on Woodson 10.5 mil salary, because they're trying to free up cap money not taking on more.

I think the Raiders shot themselves in the foot on this one. Woodson is happy to play for $10.5M and no one else is willing to pay him anything in that ballpark given his injuries, poor attitude, declining level of play and lack of big-play potential.
They will probably just let him leave as a UFA next year after another disappointing campaign.
Buchanon is a bit of a feast or famine player who also has an attitude problem.
Unless the Raiders find a taker for Woodson, they don't have the cap space to sign Howard anyway.
Minnesota is likely the only team that has the need, resources, interest and cap space to pursue Howard.
I still think we should be lowering our offer to the Saints during the draft. They will be getting desperate to move Howard soon.

I am beginning to think this Howard trade may not happen at all. I would still like to see it happen, but the prospects aren't looking so good.

just like they did last year. makes sense to me.
But I still think they'll prolly still try and work out trade probably even after the draft. Two much tied up into one position IMO.

Abraham is going to cost way more than Howard both in picks and salary. I wouldn't make that commitment to a guy as soft and uncommitted as he appeared to be late last season. He also has had a DUI and injuries that have resulted in him missing major playing time in multiple seasons.
I prefer we just take our chances in the draft at this point. We might do better with Bill in charge - he did pick Shaun Ellis and John Abraham in the same draft.

Are the Raiders switching back to the 4-3, if not why would the Raiders want him, I know they ran a 3-4 last year.

They ran a 3-4 with a DT (Sapp) at DE. Their defense was awful. They added Moss for Collins to throw to, I can see why they'd now want to stabilize the defense. For them this move would make sense. Just as much as it does for us. The poker game goes on.

I hope the trade doesn't go through. Too much money on an aging player, who's good, but not that good.

Maybe we should 'hold'em' when talking about our draft picks. I don't want to overpay.
This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

My exact thought. This has been one of the the biggest holes on our team for YEARS and it looks like we're dragging our feet and won't get it done. It's getting old (like Parcells players).
