IF I were running the show.....
Been thinking about what I would do with the rest of this offseason.... Obviously there a still a few needs left to be addressed... a big part of that will be the draft... But i still think there are some moves to be made in FA.
the obvious areas of need are (in my order):
LB
DE
FS
RT
WR
RB
since I'm bored, I figure i'd post what I would like done with these... This isn't really easy, because we don't know if we are going with the 3-4, 4-3 or a combination.
LB- If it's 3-4 we need 2 maybe... I think they can find at least 1 on the current roster to play the other MLB spot with Dat. If not there are a few players left in FA that might do. Jay Foreman, Rob Morris and Ronal McKinnon are the top 3 left. but i expect that it will be someone on the current roster. OLB is a whole other story. We NEED an impact player there. I think this means draft. Obviously if Johnson were to bet here at 11, it's a no brainer... but that's not likely to happen. So it's probably Merrmian at 11. (unless a miralce happens and Edwards or Mike Williams drop).
DE -I think the Howard deal gets done... but i'm hoping very much it's not more than the 2nd round pick. For arguements sake, I'll say it is. BUT, If these doesn't get done then there are several options. Carlos Hall and Trevor Pryce are available, but i'm not wild about either. Marques Douglas is available for nothing.... but the Boys don't seem interested which is strange if they are going to a 3-4. I think Glover may end up playing DE at times this year. If none of the above happens than #20 becomes really really interesting. because a choice will need to be amde if it's a DE, FS, WR or other, depending on what's available it could be made easier.
FS- Probably the 1 position that is way up in the air. personally I love the ty Law idea, but can't see it happening. Same goes for Antrell Rolle at #20, and moving him to FS. I think he has too much potential at CB to make him a FS... but for a couple years it might not be a bad idea. Personally I LOVE the idea of taking the Best Player Available in any draft... and Rolle would be at #20 should he be there. IF we still have a 2nd round pick (probably spending #20 on a DE or WR) then I like Bullocks or Pool in the 2nd. Otherwise we could hope Buckley gets a walk, and we swoop in. Last option would be Hunter at FS or signing a lessser CB (Hawkins, Beasley, Hill or Harper) and moving them over.
RT - easy enough... I like Chris Terry. I think he's very solid and would come cheap enough... He would give us a very solid line that has depth to boot. Otherwise the RT is already on the team (Rogers may need to step up big time)
WR - I am all for spending the #20 on a WR (Williamson, Clayton, White in that order) IF we don't need to use it on a DE, or the we don't go for the best player available (assuming Rolle is there). I also like the idea of trading don yet again and getting an extra 2nd or 3rd too.BUt assuming Rolle is gone and we stay put... i like a young FAST WR here.
RB - we do need a backup and I like the idea of spending either 4th on someone like Frank gore... or a 5th/6th on YES Clarett. I know he ran a bad 40... and yes he is a problem guy... BUT... for a 6th round pick that 99% of the time produces ntohing... he's worth a risk... he's not going to get millions and he could be cut with 0 ramifications so why not? risk v reward makes this a very good gamble.
recap:
My most ideal and still likely scenario:
LB - Merriman at #11
DE- Trade 2nd for Howard
FS - Toughest call - I'll go with Hunter at FS, followed by Law/FA
RT - Chris Terry (FA)
WR - Williamson/Clayton/White at #20
RB - Clarett in later rounds (or some somoen else in rounds 4-6)

Instead of Clarett.
How about trading our 4th round pick for RFA Najeh Davenport?
He and Julius make one hell of a one two punch.

Good stuff:
But Howard and FS in round 2 you can't have both. Not you but I see a lot of Posters all gaga to Trade for Howard yet they turn around and are high on drafting FS Bullocks in #2 in other threads..... Howard trade likely costs us at min #2 and all our Salary Cap to sign him....

I have seen that too.... But i was just trying to mention all the possibilities i see and pick one.... the Pool/Bollocks thing is ONLY if we don't make the Howard trade... in my recap i did not account for that 2nd round pick and that's why i wrote Hunter or Law at FS. Law being ideal, Hunter being more likely. If we DO keep opur second and don't get howard than i like Pool or Bollocks and change the WR at #20 to a DE possibly. not sure who though.

love the idea, but not sure how likely it would be. Clarett with a 6th or 5th seems very likely as it stands. I woldn't mind taking a chance on A-train for a low contract either... he's the kind of change of pace that we need in a backup.

Only one problem.....he wants to start. That is why he is still available.
This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

It's amazing how quick "wants to" turns into "whatever you say coach" when you're looking at a year without a salary.

It's been mentioned before, but Davenport is rehabbing from some shoulder injury. Doubt he's an option before the draft. Depending on how it heals up, he may be an option, later.
Thank you to all donated to the Jason Witten Camp drive!

He must be an idiot if he really believes there is even a remote chance of starting still. Travis Henry, Alexander, and edge are all available for pennies on the dollar but no one is biting. the teams that need a RB are looking at teh draft and realizing that there are more than enough RB's to get a good one there. There's just no market for Rb's right now... especially those who are not starter quality like A-train. Taking a backup spot to Julius (who has already had 1 serious injury) is his best chance to get quality snaps next year, prove something and cash in a year or 2 later.

I don't get it. 99% of 6th round picks turn into nothing... so you'd rather take the normal 6th round talent and try to hit on that 1%, than take clarett who has shown incredible talent before but has dropped for being a "loser" as you say. a 6th round pick gets next to no money.. so there's no risk there. losing a 6th round pick is so common i wouldn't call that a risk either. Meanwhile y taking him, you have a father figure type coach in Parcells who can help him grow up, he has something to proove big time, and if he works out he can be traded for a #1 in the future...... where EXACTLY is the downside to this scenario??? worst case scenraio: he is a problem and gets cut... he makes nothing anyway so it effects the cap 0, and all we've lost is a 6th rounder???

Apparently i don "got it"... Do you know Clarett? You've met him and and assured he is nothing but a punk, and he can contribute to your team?
Ok then... out of the Cowboy's loyalty to you they shouldn't gamble on a player that could become a valuable asset in the future?
right.
