our success hinges on #21
when you think about it (and even if you didn't) the largest single factor for THIS team having success has got to be the running game. we all know how bledsoe and co. in buffalo started out 0-4 last year. i at least believed the pick we would be receiving from them this year would be top 10. when their running game was able to get their job done, they took a serious run at a playoff spot, in a dog-eat-dog division and conference. and so much for a top 10 pick...
more to the point, if we lost Julius Jones to injury it could mean the season. we're pretty much locked in to who the starting QB will be, but a lot of folks think henson could step in and do as good a job. not so with julius' replacement. and i am pretty sure jerry and bill are as acutely aware of that as anyone.
we each have our own ideas what the biggest needs are for this team. i'm just saying i would much rather have a backup RB i feel somewhat comfortable with than some other positions i could name.
we all have to admit to believing bill parcells can find RBs. do not be shocked if we take kj harris in the 4th, or cedric houston or brandon jacobs in the 5th. whoever it is, we will draft a RB. no doubt in my mind. as insurance, it would be foolish not to. can we agree?
p.s. here's hoping julius stays healthy and puts up 1400!!!!!

I agree with you 100%. But I think a healthy Julius puts up 1600, if he doesn't miss any time.

yes sir, if julius stays healthy , katy bar the door!! 2000 yards is not out of the question. we do need a backup for insurance, but we can get one with those two number 6 picks we got.

I agree. If healthy the entire season, 1,600 yards is definitely attainable for Julius Jones. I love the kid.
But let's not forget about ReShard Lee as a backup. Very likely. But I also agree that somewhere in the draft we take a flyer on a RB.

How do you figure? So ReShard is off the team? ReShard will be given every opportunity to be the change of pace RB (backup).

Did you miss last season? When JJ went out early in the year, it was Eddie, Richie, and ReShard who were left to carry the load. Even with Old & Older in front of him, ReShard only had 27 carries all season. 27 carries all season!!! Let me put that into perspective for you. Vinny Testaverde, who from all accounts can be outrun by a turtle on ritalin, had only 6 carries less than Lee. ReShard wasn't good enough in Parcells eyes to even see 30 carries while Eddie "lightning bolt" George was burning down Texas Stadium with his 3.3 ypc average.
Now personally I would have no problem with Lee being given the chance to hold the position of JJ's primary backup. But it's not my call and Parcells hasn't exactly shown a whole lot of faith in the man yet.

I see the point of this thread for sure... but i think the real subject is... WE NEED TO GET A QUALITY #2... depth is everything... We need to go into the season with a viable #2 option that can still get the job done if called upon. especially since we still don't know how Julius will hold up over 16 games as the feature guy.
"They say it makes your testicles shrink,'' Bonds said. "I can tell you my testicles are the same size. They haven't shrunk. They're the same and work just the same as they always have."

What makes you say this? They didn't give him that opportunity last year despite some decent runs.
Have they indicated they were going to rely on him more next yr?
I'll believe it when I see it.

JJ had a very good rookie year. But alot of his yardage came on delay/ draw plays. He had a little more trouble when teams started playing the draw and stacking the line.
Which is what you would expect, so I think having a passing game that make D's pay for stacking the line is just as important.
With Glenn back, KJ healthy and hopefully a improved line with Rivera (let's hope Adams & Allen come in shape and ready to play) hopefully we can be a lot more balanced.
I hope I am proved wrong, but I do not think JJ can with stand being a 25 - 30 carry back for a whole season.
Hopefully we can take the pressure off with a balanced attack and a number 2 runner who can be productive 5 -8 carries a game.

If they go into the season with Reshard lee as primary backup to Julius...then sorry to say but they are flat out stupid in that area.
