A little history:

I don't post much on here but I've been reading the site and posting periodically on other Cowboys sites for years. About four or five years back I was as into the draft and mocking as anyone not named Cowboyjoe. Well as most of you know a passion like that takes an inordinate amount of time to keep it properly fed and due to family committments and evolution of my job I haven't had enough to take it very seriously the last few years. I've been forced to live vicariously through you guys on this draft forum.

Fast forward to now
Over the last couple of years I've been asked at work to transition from Server Admin to Web Developer and most recently I've been asked to transition to the ever short handed database developer team and as usual there isn't time for any OJT. Whether I sink or swim will be up to me on my own time. Well as most of you can probably guess reading text books on SQL programming ranks right up there with bamboo under the fingernails and waterboarding on my 'want to do' list, as does my desire to fail.

So I came up with the bright idea of teaching myself sql by building a draft simulater. As my skill set evolves my hope is that the simulator will too. So after 2 weeks of late nights and endless cups of coffee I finally have output from Version one. My goals are two fold here. Number one to learn as much as I can and number two to end up with something that can stand up to anything on the internet.

I must admit that a month ago this wasn't in my plans and I'm not bringing alot of my own draft knowledge to the table here. The player rankings are derived from a combination of a simple algorithm that is heavily weighted toward Wes Bunting, as I found his grading scale the easiest to incorporate. Mike Mayok's top 5 for each position has significant influence where applicable. Rob Rang and Draftek also contributed and I finished it off with a little manual tweaking where needed. I hope to keep adding sources and keep tweaking the forumla to eventually come up with a better board.

My Team needs are a combination of Draftek and my own thoughts and I'm definetly not happy with what I have there yet. The simulator currently drafts primarily by need with some BPA influence mixed in. It basically creates a mini draft board at each team pick based on top x amount of positions of need and tries to pick BPA. The number of positions of need it looks at vary by where the pick is in the draft. I hope to eventually make this some thing that is easily tweakable with each run.

Finally I'm trying to do some weighting of positions based on where in the draft the pick is to try to compensate for the over drafting and underdrafting of certain positions at different points in the draft. There is quite a bit I hope to add and or fix in the future if time and my learning curve permit.

At this time it's still quite crude but I thought I'd post my first output and see if I could garner some constructive feedback to decide where to put my focus next. Never one to pass on an oppurtunity to make a short story long, here is my first 6 and 3/4 round mock. Darn thing keeps blowing up in the 7th round on the Giants. Go figure.

Nice work. It's obvious you put a lot into this and I really appreciate when people try to accomplish this.

A couple of the players I have seen graded differently (Kheeston Randall, for example, I have ranked between the 3rd and 4th rounds).

You'll probably have to toy with the number of players drafted throughout the draft (DraftScout has a positional breakdown for the averages over the past 10 years).

Good job, I'll look at it more in depth tomorrow.

Thanks I appreciate all feedback. I'll look for the positional breakdown on draft scout. I don't know much about Kheeston Randall but I'll look around for info on him an manually adjust if what I find supports it. I'll be the first to admit that my knowledge on this draft at this point isn't nearly as high as some on this board.

Kirkpatrick sliding all the way to us. This one has me perplexed. Due to his recent troubles and Mayock ranking him as the number 5 CB I docked his original grade a full point. Basically putting him in a tie with Janoris Jenkins. When I did that he was falling to the end of the first round which I thought was way too far. I then gave him 0.2 back which have virtually no effect so I gave him another 0.1 which pushed him up to us. I have since given him another 0.3 thinking I've still probably dinged him too hard and he still lands on us. If I give him any more he goes 3rd which I think is a little high for him right now given the negative buzz he has right now. I'm not sure how many top 5 or 10 teams would be ok blowing that high of a pick on a guy who does something that stupid right before the biggest job interview of his young life. For now I'm going to leave it alone and try to figure out some sort of character flag system that's weighted by team and round to deal with that type of stuff.

I think Tannehill might be a little more over drafted than I wanted. I think I need to adjust the QB round 1 reach settings a bit.

I think Poe might be sliding a little too far. I think I need to tweek the reach factor on true 3-4 NTs

I need to rework the 34 vs 43 front 7 positional logic into the system a little better

This is brilliant Staxxx!

I myself am trying to teach myself the programming language PHP and database management system MySQL...so I can say I really appreciate the effort you put into this. So far everything I have learned based off rote learning hasn't necessarily translated into great hands-on database/programming skills. Needless to say, I'm struggling

Any advice?

Are you creating a draft web-site as well or just working with SQL?

Thanks for the kind words. I've been programming .Net for a couple of years now so I can appreciate where your at. Though I really didn't know much more than some basic Select and Update type stuff I did have a little bit of a head start from my .Net programming.

When the company first asked me to start programming they sent me to a couple of boot camps where their goal is to cram about a years worth of material down your throat in a couple of weeks so you can get the industry certifications. If that's not the definition of rote learning I don't know what is. I passed the certifications and they expected me to come back and hit the ground running. Of course I didn't, I struggled with a couple of projects that were way over my head and I'd really like to pretend that I never had anything to do with them. But I stuck with it and in the last year really hit my stride with the programming. Rote learning just doesn't stick with me. I have to get my hands dirty and figure thing out, not just the how but the why too. So with the switch to SQL I decided to go with what I know works, hands on figuring things out. I am trying to it incorporate something I'm passionate about to help me push through the tough parts of the learning curve. So far I couldn't be happier with my decision.

I'd like to get this to the point where I could build a web front end that other people could input their own parameters into, adjust draft boards, team needs boards and run drafts. I have lots of ideas about how I'd like to do it but I'm not sure I'll get that far before this years draft. Right now I'm building it all in SQL and when I get it to the point that as far as learning SQL I'm ready to move on to something else, I think I'll try on doing something like that.

if those were the options, i would pick the highlighted ones

IMO the focus has to be OL and front 7, then CB

if our front 7 is not the focus this off season then we deserve what will happen next season

You don't have Devon Wylie being drafted. Wow! I hope the Cowboys take this kid in Round 7 (or as early as needed to get him).

Thanks for pointing that out. It looks like there was a glitch with the receivers. Wylie should have gone somewhere in the late 3 to early 5 range. Looks like he's not the only receiver either I see Chris Givens is undrafted as well. I'll see if I can't fix that tonight and run it agian.
