Arkansas WR Greg Childs improved his 40 time from 4.55 at combine, running a 4.41 at Pro Day today, 40.5 vertical, 4.18 shuttle, 10-7 broad
Well now, would ya look at that.

That's just flat-out amazing!

We have prospects who train for weeks to drop just a mere two-tenths of a second off their forty times, and yet we have Greg Childs literally run 1.5 seconds faster than he did at the combine.

Not to mention, he apparently added 4" to his vertical (40.5" vs. 36.5").

Yup, combine times and pro day times, like comparing apples to apples...

People need to understand that we're going to be in the same situation with Spencer this time next year, and it makes a lot of sense for the organization to protect itself this time by drafting someone like Mercilus who they can groom to take his place. Nothing has really changed long term at OLB, just that now the ? is pushed back an extra year.

Some might hate it because if you're just looking at it from a short term POV we have bigger holes right now at Guard, Center and DB. I for one have never looked at the draft this way, the right way to draft IMO is to take the best football players who will help you the most over the next decade. Not necessarily the guys who are going to fill a hole for 2012. Sometimes that means your 1st Round pick may have to sit and learn more than you would like during his rookie season, but we need to be patient.

Mercilus is the type of pick that might not bring the same return as a 1st Round Guard in year one, but will probably bring back a greater return 3,4,5 years down the line.

I agree wholeheartedly.

DeCastro is still my no.1 guy on my board at the #14 spot, but it would absolutely make sense for the Cowboys to look to add a pressure player at that spot. This draft is unordinarily deep at OG and a solid prospect can be had in the 2nd round.

I do think a guy like Mercilus could be a very productive player like Aldon Smith was for the 49ers in their 34. Parys Harrelson was the SOLB starter and Aldon came in as a passrush specialist. Nothing wrong with that. They got 14 sacks and 30 QB pressures/hurries out of a reserve player.

May not be in this situation come next year.

The two prior times the Cowboys have franchised someone, they ended up signing a long-term deal.

I'd say the odds are that Spencer will too.

Hamlin was franchised in Feb. 2008; signed a six-year deal in July '08; then was cut before the start of the 2010 season.

Like I was saying earlier, I could see a scenario where Spencer signs a cap-friendly multiyear deal that would allow the team to part ways after a season or two.

Who was the other franchised player?
