Default How the Cowboys trade up was negotiated.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nfl--ra...e-drafted.html

From the Rams perspective this was a win for them, they asked for another pick from Dallas, thankfully Stephen was on the phone, not Jerry.

Good stuff!

That morning, the coach and general manager had pulled out game tapes on the three men they were considering selecting with the sixth pick if Richardson and Blackmon were off the board: Brockers, Mississippi State defensive tackle Fletcher Cox and Claiborne.

First, they'd made the philosophical decision to go with a defensive tackle over the draft's top-rated cornerback. Then, impressed by Brockers' power and relentlessness, they had reversed their earlier thought process and elevated him over Cox.
Wow, they flipped the order of their board that morning after looking at some tape? That doesn't sound like a particularly good process to me.

Actually that's a sign, to me, of a smart front office. You always, always, always, want to reinforce your initial decision and sometimes in those last minutes reviews you find the what you really want to do.

According to Stephen the Rams initially wanted a 4th round and he said no, and then they asked for a 5th and he said no. After standing his ground the Rams agreed and the trade was made.

Make no mistake about it we got the better end of the deal.
"It's little bit like the description of pornography from years back. It's hard to define it. But you know what it is at the end of it. It's hard to define it. I think you know who is more physical. Often times you see that in the fourth quarter. A lot of time the team on the other side feels it. We pride ourselves on being a physical football team. It's important to us. It's an important time of the year to lay that foundation." - Coach Garrett

Demoff had laid the groundwork for such a discussion six hours earlier, dialing Jones and telling him, "If you want to trade up to 6, consider us. We'll be reasonable. We already got such a great deal from the Redskins [in the Griffin trade] that we won't try to screw you guys."

...

Demoff redialed Jones a minute later and told him he had a deal, making a joke about how, by trading away their second-rounder, the Cowboys were mitigating the pain of the $10 million salary-cap penalty imposed by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
Good stuff. Good article.
