Getting back our 2nd best OL from last season would certainly be a good move IMO. I would feel much better with Livings, Holland and Bernadeau on the roster. They have all shown that they can play guard adequately in this league. Let the rest (Nagy, Arkin, Leary, Kowalski, Gunn) battle it out for the center and back-up guard spots. I'm still kind of hoping that we see a starting OL consisting of Smith, Livings, Bernadeau, Holland/Leary, Free. Who knows if Bernadeau will even get a shot at center, but maybe he will if a proven vet like Holland is playing guard. I just don't want to see a guy who can't anchor on the OL. Guys like Costa and Nagy (and Proctor in the past) have gotten blown up at times. When that happens, a play has little chance of success. I'd certainly like more athleticism than what guys like Livings and Holland offer, but I'll take their size and strength over the little guys who get bowled over. Time to get better (in every sense of the word) OL.
"I just always feel that he's going to find a way to win the game…He has evolved into a great, great leader of the team...He is the total package." Roger Staubach about Tony Romo
"They're a talented group with a great quarterback, and they're well on their way." Troy Aikman on the Cowboys and Tony Romo
But what do Roger and Troy know about great quarterbacking, talent, leadership, and winning anyway?

A definite possibility.
Not too long ago, the guy was making about $5 million a year and he may not realize that he's not going to see salaries like that anymore.
I just love the versatility a player like him would bring, I think he's played every offensive line position except center and would make an ideal '6th lineman'.

Awesome post and I couldn't agree more. It's really a shame that Bern had these injuries in the offseason, because if he hadn't, he would be competing with Costa right now IMO. You can get by with Leary or Holland at RG. That way, like you said, you get your 5 best linemen on the field.

No problem!
1. Brandon Magee will beat out Ernie Sims for the backup WILL/MO roster spot.
2. Ron Leary will start at right guard over Bernadeau.
3. Joseph Randle, Terrance Williams and Gavin Escobar will have more combined TD's than DeMarco Murray, Miles Austin and Jason Witten.
4. Bruce Carter makes the Pro Bowl.
5. The starting OL will be Smith-Livings-Frederick-Leary-Free

I watched a handful of Hollands games last night on NFL.com Rewind (the new coaches all 22 footage they came out with this week is awesome), and Holland was pretty good. He was well above average in the games I watched, with the only exception the first Philly game, which was his first game back. Babin ate Tyron's lunch in that game too.
I'm fairly surprised Holland didn't find a taker this offseason considering even Bigg found a roster at the last minute. Then again, I'm sure his bicep rehab probably kept him out for most of free agency.

I don't know why that would be surprising. I would take last year's offense today it could be guaranteed, and that was with a boatload of injuries to the skill positions.
And I'm betting Bernadeau and Livings are still the starting guards this year, with Holland backing up both spots and Arkin/Nagy battling it out for the backup C and swing G. If the Cowboys didn't think Bernadeau was a starter, they wouldn't have put such a priority on him in free agency.

if I could guarantee you last year's offense right now you would take it?
very little running lanes, romo constantly uncomfortable in the pocket, bad snaps and all?

Yeah, it was 3 out of 5, but because of injury now its 4 out of 5. Once Mack is healthy, which should be by the time we play the Giants, it will be back to 3.
Of course I would love to have replaced Costa, but no need to cry over spilled milk at this point. Replacing a broken down Kosier was also a priority, but Holland wasn't the problem with the OL last year.....Kosier and Costa were the main problems, along with Free.

Yeah, I would take an offense that scores 23 points and 20 first downs per game, with a quarterback with a 100+ QBR and two leading runners with 4.5 ypc or better, despite Miles Austin, Dez Bryant, Felix Jones, DeMarco Murray and almost all of our interior OL missing large stretches of the season with injury.

The most important stat you listed is 23 points per game which was ranked 15th in the league last season. Definition of average. I'm not sure why exactly you would take that again without hesitation.

It did not matter with who was playing on the O line the results were the same
Our QB getting sacked 19 times in December alone
5 rushing TDs all year
And when was the last time anyone on this team thought we could get that one yard on the ground when it mattered?
When it really mattered last year the O could not get it done. And most of that reason was the O line.

yeah I don't get why anyone would want that back just b/c romo and murray had good seasons.
the only thing holding this team back right now is the oline.
