Default Inside story: What happened to the unborn son Rae Carruth tried to kill

Thomas Lake

Get Sports Illustrated All Access and buy the digital version of the magazine here.

In June I drove to Charlotte to meet a boy who should have been dead. And if not dead, at least miserable. The boy had permanent brain damage. He could barely walk. He could say only one or two words at a time. He was 12 years old, and his grandmother still fed him by hand. His mother was dead.

His father was in prison for arranging her murder.

The boy was Chancellor Lee Adams, son of Cherica Adams and Rae Carruth. You may have heard the story. Thirteen years ago, when Carruth was a wide receiver for the Carolina Panthers, he and Adams had a short-lived romance. When she told him she was pregnant, he told her to get an abortion. When she refused, he paid a two-bit criminal to beat her up and cause a miscarriage. When the two-bit criminal failed to do the job, Carruth raised the stakes: he wanted both mother and baby killed.

The operation did not go as planned. Cherica Adams was struck by four bullets, but she survived long enough to make the 911 call that implicated Carruth and eventually sent him to prison. And although the baby's brain was deprived of oxygen in the aftermath of the shooting, resulting in cerebral palsy, he was born alive.

Absolutely no way Caruth should be allowed within a hundred miles of that child.

Wow.

What an article.

Incredibly unfortunate that Caruth gets out after 19 years for murdering the mother of his child and attempting to murder the child.

ESPN did a segment on Carruth's son about a year or two ago. Very touching. Very sad.

Carruth should never see the light of day! Hoping someone gets to him in prison before he is released.

Default REading this...

...gave me a siock feeling in my stomach.

That boy is a beautiful looking young man. It's a shame he didn't get the chance he should have had at developing under normal conditions.

I remember hearing about that. I had no idea the child survived.
"I just kind of stopped in the middle of a route, which is the worst thing you can do," Ogletree said. "He just told me, 'What were you thinking?' I kind of mumbled something to him and he was like, 'You're stupid.' "

If you have kids, and I do, stories like this are very hard to read.

Kids are the sole reason why we're here. Looking for the meaning of life? It's in the eyes of your child, pure and simple. Until you deeply understand that, you're just taking up oxygen on this planet, and you're life really doesn't have much meaning.

More than a 100 billion people have walked this earth, gone in a cloud of mystery only windowed by a distorted and manipulated history attached. The only real imprint you make is the children you leave behind for the generations that follow you.

Kids grow up everywhere all the time without parents that give two rips about them. Thus, the ills of society are not hard to dissect. And while it's not as shocking as what Carruth did, not honoring the responsiblity and privilege of being a parent does kids almost equal harm.

Your child is your mirror to your soul.
