I don't think he sucks. I think he's a great blocker. While he had *ability* that would mesh with being a good pass receiver, I thought his pass receiivng *skills* were poor and questioned if he could ever effectively catch the ball and I am still not impressed by his pass catching skills.
That being said, I am glad we rid of him. For a long time we have had players like Bennett who are not bad players, but fall woefully short of reaching their potential for the mere reason that they would rather enjoy the fruits of being an NFL player and playing in Dallas. And while that in itself would not be bad for the team, when other players see this and start to emulate players like Bennett, that becomes bad for the team.
I'd rather have hard working players like John Phillips, who can play in this league, that wastes of talent like Bennett.

"disappointment to humanity" Seems harsh...he definitely held his own last night and had some good 1on1s with Babin.

Injury is not the excuse, Witten even admitted his poor play had nothing to do with his injury. The injury excuse talk is just homers here. I'm not sure what his problem has been lately but I know he is hurting the team. I would love to see a lot more Hanna out there and less Witten. He should be eased back in when playing the way he has.
I love the upside with Hanna too, the guy has great hands, speed, and athleticism. I also like the fact that if Witten is not on the field, it will make Romo throw the ball more to WR's. Romo depends too much on Witten as a security blanket and that typically hurts us.

lets just say witten is no tony gonzalez.
age catches up to most players, and witten is aged. he's been a progress stopper the past 3 years.
i hope they give hanna more chances. phillips also looked better then witten with the few snaps he's played

Question: The Cowboys have had several instances over the years of letting underperforming players go, only to have them thrive with other teams. Is it perhaps a player evaluation problem leading to this? Martellus Bennett is the latest.
Answer - Josh: So let’s go over all these guys who have left and begun to thrive with other teams in recent years: Marty B. (so far), Stephen Bowen (who was pretty good as a Cowboy), Chris Canty (sort of). There it is, that’s the list. The player evaluation problem with Bennett was back in the 2008 draft, when they thought he would be a weapon as Jason Witten’s sidekick. He wasn’t, and the Cowboys should have zero regrets about him moving on four years later.
That about sums it up!

I am going to miss Josh. Bennett? Nope, not for a minute.

Looking at his numbers isn't so simple. The parts of NY games that I've seen have shown me he's still the same player--unreliable. He just gets targeted more. Thus, more balls to catch--and more balls to drop.

This.
Bennett has dropped multiple TD passes and made the same bone headed plays we've always seen from him. The difference now is that he is a starter and gets a ton more chances.
Don't mistake more opportunities for a great player.

writing Bennett off because of one game,,, a game in which their pass protection needed him to stay in to block, is just plain foolish. No doubt Bennett will occasionally do things to aggravate Eli, but he will be a good player for them.

Lost in all of the attention around Witten is the fact that Phillips is a mediocre blocking TE. Bennett's value to us as a blocker is more apparent with every QB pressure and blown running play

You must be right. Every starter in the league has at least as many receptions and TDs. Oh.. wait. That's not true. Hmmmmm.

so many of you don't get it. All players have flaws. His issue was never lack of talent. The Cowboys spent a 2nd round pick on him....so clearly they thought he had talent. The right leadership and the right coaching staff would have gotten more out of him than we did. I am not suggesting he should have started over Witten. What I am suggesting is that Dallas needs to get out of the business of using premium picks on players without a clue of what you are going to do with them. And 4 years was enough time to figure out how to use him.
As players...part of being a good leader and teamate is HELPING each other...and the shucking and jiving Bennett did would NOT have been tolerated in a lockeroom with REAL leaders. The inability to get him more targets would NOT have happened with a real coach.
No one is suggesting he was....is....or ever will be better than Witten. But the kid had/has too much talent to be helping our division rival right now. I guess he did not suck enough in Dallas for the world champs to be scared of putting him in their STARTING linuep!

Every TE that has ever been the starter alongside Eli in New York has had huge success. Most of them were average or below. Eli establishes great chemistry with all his TEs.
Bennett's bone headed moves haven't decreased at all, his touches have simply increased.

This... People forget that Bennett was not only consistent as a blocker, but damn good at it. He wasn't a primary target anyways and when he was here, everybody use to argue that he doesn't get his touches because Witten is the all-pro TE that Bennett isn't going to take attempts away from.
Yeah, he made some bone-headed drops, but that wasn't his primary role here and if he was targetted more often, he would probably have made some pretty 'amazing' plays as well.
It's amazing how many people look for scape-goats on this organization outside the real problems.. Bennett is gone and our blocking is way worse than it ever was.
