Default Whats the point of calling out the "mike" before every play?

Followed football for a long time. Never got a good explanation on it. The middle linebacker is normally the same guy every play so whats the point of identifying him
And now I cant get back again...

Perfect explanation:

"I just kind of stopped in the middle of a route, which is the worst thing you can do," Ogletree said. "He just told me, 'What were you thinking?' I kind of mumbled something to him and he was like, 'You're stupid.' "

The video didn't work for me. Justin case I wasn't alone. Mike is the QBs first read and that is the main tackler on the Defense. The Defense is designed to funnel towards him whether it is run or pass. So a QB calls him out first so that whomever is assigned to that zone on the field knows who is calling the defensive shots.

Works fine for me, sometimes takes a few to load...

Hostile's explanation works. In the video it's explained really well though. Billick is one of the best X's and Os guys in the NFL. Really smart guy.

The mike lb is pointed out to set the protection/blocking scheme. It's the center defender and protection rules use them as a base to decide who blocks who given the defensive front in front of them.

I'd guess after Romo tells DB where to line up, .. he tells him where the ML is.
