Spencer is a good player.
But i let him walk and here's why.
Sean lee will need extending very soon, maybe in the offseason and then at most 2 years down the line Bruce Carter will need a new contract too.
You cant sign everybody and i'd take those two over Spencer and only one of those two.
Salary cap, salary cap, salary cap.

Id take it a step further and go back to a 4-3 with Lee in the middle and Carter at SLB.

Using Ware's stats don't change that at all which was my point.
I agree with you if you mean we could resign him and win with him as a 6m per type player. And I don't think e is at all bad all around at his job.
I just see wayyy over the top nonsense about his rating as a top OLB and that just isn't accurate. We did miss him while he was out certainly but that's probably because we have zero depth at the position to speak of.

It was meant to be a comparison to other 34 defenses in the league and how Ware and Spencer stack up as a duo. Spencer, as a sidekick, is right there with the other sidekicks in the league production-wise. It has been written and talked about what Spencer's role is in Ryan's scheme.
So, we have to take that into account. Fact is, teams don't seem to run as effectively or use screens as effectively when he is on the field.
I agree on the money, but they weren't going to find a cheaper replacement that can do what he does in this system for this year.

They are going to re-sign Spencer and we will all be PO'ed in a year.
1. Brandon Magee will beat out Ernie Sims for the backup WILL/MO roster spot.
2. Ron Leary will start at right guard over Bernadeau.
3. Joseph Randle, Terrance Williams and Gavin Escobar will have more combined TD's than DeMarco Murray, Miles Austin and Jason Witten.
4. Bruce Carter makes the Pro Bowl.
5. The starting OL will be Smith-Livings-Frederick-Leary-Free

Someone will probably pay him close to $10 million a season.
I'd rather Dallas went into rebuild mode and use that money to shore up multiple positions.

Good point, but I don't see Jerry going into re-build mode, he is more likely to resign aging / marginal starters than spend the money on building for the future.

Well, that is it exactly.
Although I hated sticking Spencer with the franchise tag, there weren't any great options in FA or the draft. Meanwhile, if the underclassmen come out, this could be a banner year for 3-4 OLB types.
After last year, I thought it'd probably be a two year rebuilding job to get the pieces in place to make a run. However, that was predicated on making the right moves and assuming the primary team needs were CB, S, OLB, C and G.
Last year, both the draft and FA were strong at CB and guard. Those should have been resolved last year. I think they solved corner....maybe even to the point of overkill. However, I think they may have missed the boat on guard.
This year is looking to be strong at OLB and decent at S. Still not a lot of great C options, however. And I'm not convinced the team will address C anyway although I think having a guy who can make all the calls there would do wonders for the team which is why I wouldn't have minded a guy like Koppen.
Depending upon how the team finishes, this might be a year to get an OLB high and then move into late 1 to grab a guy like Barrett Jones or do OLB/Barrett Jones 1-2 depending upon where the team is drafting and Jones ends up being projected.

That's if you're simply looking for a free agent name.
They could have gone to the draft as the draft has produced a handful of players outside of the 1st round in the past couple years who rush the passer just as well if not better.

Well, I'll throw out a name in the draft that I wanted to take.

Yeah he looks like he's full of potential and he's already doing well.
