I would say that the Ratliff extension bothers me more than handing Church a new deal.

Craig
Chicago thought they had a QB in Rex Grossman, Carolina had faith in Jake Delhomme. What does this have to do with the Dallas Cowboys? It just might mean that Tony Romo isn't what we thought and we may have to move forward without him.

I expect that Church was negotiating a new deal when he got hurt.

This is just Jerry showing the he negotiates in good faith.

This is about more than Church, it is about players here and elsewhere knowing how Jerry treats guys

Yes, being true to your word is a Country Club atmosphere.

"We made you this offer before you got hurt. Screw you."

How you treat players matters in this league.

It's mattered all the way to 1 playoff win since 1996.

That's not how contracts work -- negotiating does not equal "binding contract".

Being "true to his word" has absolutely nothing to do with it.

5 year $12.4M contract w/ $3.8M guaranteed.

$2.5M SB (that's prorated over 5 years) so $500K every year.

Here's the breakdown:

2012: $540,000, 2013: $823,000, 2014: $1 million, 2015: $1.75 million, 2016: $2.75 million

Barry would have been a RFA, so he's getting $1.323M and $1.5M for the next two years.

That's peanuts for a starting S in this league.
"It's little bit like the description of pornography from years back. It's hard to define it. But you know what it is at the end of it. It's hard to define it. I think you know who is more physical. Often times you see that in the fourth quarter. A lot of time the team on the other side feels it. We pride ourselves on being a physical football team. It's important to us. It's an important time of the year to lay that foundation." - Coach Garrett

Correct, the injury should have tilted the negotiation to JJ's favor, just as if Church would have went on to have a probowl year his agent would've asked for more. What they settled on could've been with the injury in consideration.

Got news for you, Barry Church isn't a starting S in this league.

As I recall, he also hated drafting Murray and said he was a noted fumbler.

Do you have some inside information on why he isn't...coach?

The only thing Church is guaranteed is $3.8M.

Marginal physical talent. He's now ruptured his Achilles which will likely take away some of the ability he does have. He may end up starting because of how the Cowboys operate, but it's doubtful that he's going to be a productive player. By my calculations, that doesn't amount to a "starting SS in this league."
