Simple. They thought Free would be ok at RT and the thought of cutting him so soon is completely unexpected.
This is a team who is battling several major injuries to
key players including Pro Bowl talents like Lee, Austin, Jenkins, Murray,
Carter and Ratliff. Other key starters missing include Costa, Smith, Church and
Coleman. That is 11 key players - that's half the starting lineup. Yet we still went 8-8.

i.e. Doug Free's original signing bonus was for $10.3 million spread over four years, or $2.575m added to each year's base salary. The club reworked his deal to drop his 2012 salary to $1.2 million and turned the remaining $4.8m into another signing bonus. So, although his base salary for 2013 remained at $7 million, his cap hit went from $9.575m ($7m base +2.575m SB) to $11.175m ($7m base +2.575m SB +1.6m SB). The cost to release Free, which the Dallas brass never considered it would have to do, now goes up from $5.15m to $8.35 million.
[View Full Quote]Now, I'm no capologist, and I hope that I've presented the situation accurately. If not, I apologize for any inconsistencies in the conclusions I'm drawing. If so, I can't help but wonder how in the world Dallas finds itself in this situation yet the Philadelphia Eagles signed any and everyone they could find in 2011 and will be $20 million under the 2013 cap before they release QB Michael Vick from his $100 million contract.
The six-year contract only paid Vick a $7m signing bonus, and with two years completed would now cost them $4.66m to release him. It will cost the Cowboys almost twice as much to release Doug Free as it will for the Eagles to release Mike Vick.
What in the world is our front office doing?

Signing people like Free to bad contracts.

signing Free was a gamble just like every other extension that is done. Any one can turn out bad.
Now the Barber extension was without a doubt the dumbest one Jerruh did; you have a back that always had a limited service life due to how he ran. Then you extend him for that long? THAT WAS STUPID.
Now at the time we gave Free the extension he had played pretty well as a LT for one full season. He had a prior record of playing well at RT. He was pretty young.
So you put that all together and you have reason to extend.
Just goes to show you that any one can go bad

The cap is a joke. Stephen has already said that if there is a player they want they can find a way to get the player.
Problem with this organization is.....they have no clue on what players to go after. FA or the draft.
The reason they have sucked for 17 years is the way they manage the team, not the cap.

Philly manages the Cap and not the Team. How many rings do they have?

If Free is cut, then his contract will basically be a 2-year, 17M (8.5M per year average) deal with the Cap Hit spread out over 4-years.
The actual cap hits would be:
2011 3.275
2012 5.375
2013 4.175
2014 4.175

Since the cap came about in the 90's who has had the better run of success?
Philly by a mile.
for the last 17 years, the Cowboys have been a joke of a franchise. Super Bowls are nice but the 70's and early 90's are long gone.

Brandon Carr and Tony Romo count for 16 million apiece in 2013. both will probably be reworked to shave about twenty million off of the CAP.

If I was Romo, I wouldn't rework anything unless it came with a full new extension and a promise of an overhauled oline. Otherwise, I tell the team to kick rocks.

But I am no expert by any wild stretch. Put no stock in my numbers. Especially if Adam tells you different.

My guess is they hand Carr a big bonus check and roll much of his large base into a SB for cap relief.
That will free up around 10m dollars.
But I still don't know what any team saw Thursday night that would have made them comfortable with waiting a round or two for the offensive lineman they wanted. ---Todd McShay
We just converted half our LB to DL. We have a 30m starting DL, it better be pretty friggin good.

No, you wouldn't.
You'd take as much cash up front as possible and free up as much cap space as possible so the team could add talent around you.
Any OL concerns would be completely unrelated to your financial situation and would be communicated regardless.

Right and that cash upfront could come in the form of a new contract.

Stephen also said they are tight up against the cap next year.
Reality is, you don't go out and get guys without it costing you.
This team has added players at a good success rate. The big miss right now is a homegrown guy in Doug Free. That and overpaying for an again TNew were the big FA mistakes.
They got tremendous value in other outside FAs. Laurent Robinson being the largest.
