Twitter Saints owner Benson would sue league if Payton leaves for Dallas

https://twitter.com/edwerderespn/sta...35740255748096

Ed Werder reports that Saints owner Tom Benson would sue the league for millions if Payton left for "Dallas or elsewhere"...

Interesting wording...

Very good source tells me that Saints owner Tom Benson would sue league for millions if Sean Payton allowed to leave for Dallas or elsewhere
Interesting.. the fact that Benson is considering/worried about this makes me think he thinks there's a realistic possibility that Payton leaves.

Forgive my ignorance, but how could he sue the league? Isn't Payton's contract voided?

Based on what? Voiding the contract? I'm pretty sure there were strong legal reasons for this. Benson is getting desperate. Understandably so. I wouldn't want to lose Payton either.

Jerry for tampering and the NFL for allowing it. IMO.

I posted this in the news zone, the wording Dallas or elsewhere is what got my eye, I guess we're the front runners?

Can you tamper if Payton dosen't have a contract? I don't think so. He is not the Saints property.

Payton has no contract. He's a free agent. He can talk to anybody he wants.

Sounds like the owner may actually be scared of losing him to here.

Benson must be basing this on the fact that he is not counting this year as counting against payton's current contract, without the extension. He will claim that Payton is under contract through 2013.

SP is just posturing—using Dallas as leverage—for more money. He’s not going anywhere and expect him to be the highest paid coach in the NFL—for the Saints.
