This site is a map of all the Internet Exchanges. Or POPs. (Point of Presence) These sites are the actual on-ramps to the Internet.

You connect to your Internet service provider. They then have a connection to a POP. They route your traffic over their network and then on to the POP which it then goes where ever in the world the server you are making requests to is.
