Head Coach in 2014?
Let me preface this as saying I'm PRAYING for a Cowboys win this week against the skins. I think getting into the playoffs is the key, anything can literally happen once you make it in.
Now, onto the reason why I'm making this post. I read something last week, along the lines that Sean Payton might coach next year for the Saints as the last year of his contract. Because he was suspended this year, it might not count as a contract year. I believe there is no precedent in this matter, so it might be left up to a third party to make a decision on it.
If this is indeed the case, this could surely benefit the Cowboys. I say this because, we all know that Jerry Jones likes Jason Garrett. And the truth of the matter is Jason Garrett hasn't been given enough time up to this point to make a fair assessment on the job he has done. He's done some good things, and he's done some questionable things. But these things tend to take time, and Jason Garrett just hasn't had enough of it to truly give him a fair grade.
Now if he were to coach next season, I think at that point, if the Cowboys have not made the playoffs, then you might visit the idea of hiring Sean Payton if he does indeed become available.
Obviously there a lot of hypotheticals involved in this scenario for obvious reasons that this season hasn't even been completed. For all we know our boys could make a run and win it all this year (God willing!). Just throwing a thought out there.
Don't bother responding if you're gonna say something along the lines of "this year isn't even over yet!", I get that, again; HYPOTHETICAL!
Merry Christmas to all!

Admit I'm surprised when many appear to think that Payton would want to become the Cowboys HC. Why would he? We all know he was defacto OC under Parcells and thus certainly knows not only what Parcells thought of Jerry, etc.
Since then, Payton won a SB & the Saints have been consistently seen as a viable SB contender. He & GM Loomis built a powerhouse together there. Why would Payton tolerate Jerry's interference as GM. The answer is he wouldn't. Also there will be other HC jobs available for Payton to chose from. In order words Payton will be the hot commodity.
Only way Payton takes Cowboy HC job is if Jerry finally sees the light after 2013 season & reluctantly is forced to give up AT LEAST his GM duties, allow Payton to bring in his own GM & include al of that in a contract so Jerry couldn't interfere at all. Also Jerry would have to pay top dollar along with it.
I do believe Payton would love to work with Romo. Payton has been a Romo supporter/promotor starting when Romo was still in college. Don't forget Brees wasn't the Brees he became with the Saints while he was a Charger. Just imagine how good Romo could be with a real HC & a real GM.

If Brees doesnt go to New Orleans, would be people be so high on Payton? Just layin' it out there.
Without Brees, this Saints team is awful.
There is no formula for success except an unconditional acceptance of life and what it brings.

There are plenty of reasons why Payton would want to coach the Cowboys. The history is there, he lives in Texas, apparently is very good friends with Jerry, and Dallas is a top notch and loyal franchise (ironic, loyalty might be what keeps this from happening because Jerry seems like he's gonna stick with Garrett).
For all the crap Jerry gets, we've had some pretty good talent here the last 5 years. Not nearly as talented as the media hypes them up going into each season, but hardly a laughing stock as many here would lead you to believe. Jerry is always willing to go and get any player. It's not like he just blindly goes out and gets people, he does get a lot of information from the football people in the organization. Just because he has the final say doesn't mean every move made is wrong, or he's to blame on every failed transaction.
If Payton feels like he might want to distance himself from the whole bounty situation and move on elsewhere, why not Dallas? A storied franchise that has one playoff series in the last 15+ years? Who wouldn't want to take on a project like that, especially when theres a good foundation already in place (Romo, Dez, Witten, Tyron, Miles, Harris, Ware, Lee, Carter, Carr and Mo)
With all that being said, I'm very much a fan of Jason Garrett and the only real circumstance that would make me want to see him go is if Sean Payton is hired. I think the one major thing holding Garrett back is the fact that he's learning how to be a head coach while also doing another big job in offensive coordinator. If someone like Norv was brought in, and helped take the weight off Garretts shoulders, I think we'd see less mental errors from Garrett.
Think about it for a second, for a guy who went to Princeton, played the QB position, is very detail oriented, he sure makes a lot of errors for a "strategist". That leads me to believe that there's just way too much on his plate, it would be hard enough as it is for him to do both jobs if he had 10 years experience as a head coach, let alone this being his first stint as head coach.

I would tolerate Redball's return as H.C. Only. If he returns with O.C. Duties also, I am against it.
Now if this team totally wets the bed vs Washington this week, he has to go.
Jerry Jones....Selling mediocrity and excuses to the fans since 1997.

Agree 1000000% on the bolded part. As for the second part, he is coming back no matter if we win or lose. Hopefully he is not wearing both the HC and OC hats next year.
"Maybe next year!!" We have been saying this phrase WAYYYYY too long!!!!!!!!!!

Who knows, if he is just the HC he may be much better at it. I think he has run his course as OC. We do so much better on offense when we fall behind and Romo takes over play calling at the line. I hope we bring in Norv Turner. He is an offensive genius and runs basically the same offense (= very little adjustment) yet he is much better at calling plays. Red may flourish at HC if he concentrates on just doing that job with the main responsibilities being MOTIVATING and DISCIPLINING the team.

Jason isn't going anywhere I wouldn't think. I think Jerry gives him next season at least. Now if he pulls a wade phillips during the season next year then who knows what JJ would do.
